Bishops girls join lacrosse league

Archbishop Williams will play its first varsity girls' lacrosse season this year.

More than 30 tried out for the program that Bishops coach Gordon McClay will lead into competition in the Catholic Central League.

"Girls' lacrosse is really taking off across the country the way that soccer did 20 years ago," said Archbishop Williams athletic director Joe Francis.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer this new program to our students. We have a number of gifted athletes who have been playing on youth lacrosse teams, and we are expecting to field a very competitive team in our first season."

This will be the 11th varsity sport for girls at Archbishop Williams.

There are also 11 varsity sports for boys.

The Bishops will open their season on Thursday against Matignon.

Wheaton baseball in 8-game streak

The Wheaton College baseball team extended its win streak to eight games through Wednesday, ranked 10th in the nation and first in New England in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll.

Wheaton designated hitter Jeff Lieneck of Foxborough contributed in Wheaton's 10-4 win over Suffolk University on April 3. He was 2 for 2 with one run scored and one RBI, as Wheaton improved its record to 13-5.

UMass's Kovach gets rookie award

University of Massachusetts at Boston lacrosse attack Peter Kovach of Cohasset was selected the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for his performance from March 25 to April 1.

Kovach collected nine points on six goals and three assists in three games. He also scored twice in an 8-7 victory over Curry College on March. 29.

Kovach entered the week with six goals, which ranked second on the team.

Rox select Yunits as team leader

The Brockton Rox selected former Brockton mayor Jack Yunits to be team president as they prepare for the May 25 start of the season. Yunits, mayor from 1996 to 2006, has been credited with spearheading the construction of Campanelli Stadium, home field of the Rox.

"Jack Yunits is the reason that I came to Brockton and he is the reason the Rox exist, which makes it only appropriate that he leads the Rox to a new level of excellence," Rox primary owner Van Schley said in a statement.

The Brockton Rox are in their fifth season and play in the independent Can-Am League.

Hutchinson takes cancer fight to D.C.

Mellie Hutchinson of Hingham has been chosen to be a Massachusetts representative at Livestrong Day in Washington, D.C. in May.

Hutchinson will be among 200 who will join the Lance Armstrong Foundation to meet with members of Congress and share personal cancer stories.

The group will also request more funding for cancer treatment and services.

Hutchinson, who is battling breast cancer, is a participant in the Pan-Mass Challenge.

"We need the research and the funding to help people who are battling cancer, people who have their battle and for those in the future that are going to battle," Hutchinson said.

"I feel like that's my responsibility to represent those who cannot advocate for themselves."

Bentley captures tennis advantage

Bentley College sophomore Heather Haggerty helped the women's tennis team secure home-court advantage in the Northeast-10 quarterfinals with her performance in a conference match on Tuesday.

Bentley defeated Southern New Hampshire, 7-2.

Haggerty, of Hanover, won her singles match, 6-2, 7-5, against Southern New Hampshire.

Then she teamed up with Katherine Giambalvo in doubles to win, 8-5.

It was the sixth consecutive win for Bentley.

The Falcons conference schedule will end on Wednesday against Franklin Pierce. The Northeast-10 quarterfinals will begin April 18.
