After falling to Framingham's Nick Flannery in the Division 1 state individual semifinals last weekend, New Bedford's Cory Melo bumped up a weight class and took an 11-7 decision in the rematch last night. The win propelled the Whalers to a 39-26 win over the visiting Flyers in the state Division 1 team semifinals.

Flannery pinned Melo at 103 pounds Saturday, but moved into the 112-pound division last night after the Flyers (21-5) bumped up their first five weight classes. Melo made weight for the 103-pound fight, giving him the opportunity to take the night off with a default.

But New Bedford coach Steve Estevez said there was no hesitation to set up the rematch.

"That was a big one," he said. "When [Flannery] didn't make weight . . . we were at the scales after the weigh-in [and] we were like, 'Corey, what do you want to do? Do you want to bump up?' And he was like, 'Yeah, Coach, I'd like to wrestle him again.' "

Despite the loss, Framingham coach Jon Kanavich said he was proud of his team's effort in the absence of wrestlers from two weight classes, and had no regrets about bumping up his first five wrestlers.

"Making weight over and over again can kind of wear on you, and the kids, I wanted to give them a break from it. I thought we could win with [the new weight classes]," he said, noting his regular 140- and 215-pound wrestlers were unable to compete.

Division 1: Amadu Jalloh's victory by decision in the last match sealed a 34-26 semifinal victory for Lowell over Springfield Central.

Division 2: North champion Greater Lawrence defeated Metro champion Natick, 42-21. Francesco Ortiz (119) and Chris de la Rosa (160) collected key pins for the Reggies.

Division 3: North champion Winchester stretched its winning streak to 60 by toppling West champion Southwick, 50-6. Two of the Sachems' individual state champions, Charlie Hale (160) and Connor McNamara (189), won by pin.
