Falmouth withstood a furious comeback by visiting Marshfield in the closing minute of their Atlantic Coast League lacrosse matchup yesterday, holding on for a 10-9 win.

The Clippers were up, 10-7, after having overcome a first-half deficit, but with 44 seconds on the clock Marshfield struck twice, the second with 19 seconds left, to put the game in jeopardy.

"At no time were we really out of the woods," said Falmouth coach Greg Gilbert.

Falmouth had fallen behind, 5-2, in the second quarter, but by halftime had managed to claw back to 5-4 on Roscoe Sweeney's goal as the horn sounded.

The Clippers took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Rams, 4-1.

The Clippers added two more scores in the fourth to get some breathing room.

Junior Shawn Price led the Clippers' attack, scoring three times and contributing an assist. Senior captains Mike Wilson, Tyler Sabens, and Terrence Dineen each scored twice as the experienced players helped pick the team up.

"To be down three goals to a good team like Marshfield, that was kind of frightening," Gilbert said. "I think that third quarter for us was huge, we got some big goals there."

Marshfield (4-3) won the faceoff battle, 13-9, but Falmouth (7-0) won the ground-ball fight, 40-33.

"We were lucky in some ways because they hit a couple of pipes," Gilbert said.

"But I was really proud of our guys for hanging in there."
