Mansfield duo are Maine men

The state track season has ended but local athletes continued to reap honors at the 63d New England Interscholastic Outdoor Championships yesterday at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.

A pair of Mansfield boys turned in winning performances.

Matt Callanan won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.40 seconds, leading four Massachusetts finishers in the top six. Callanan was followed by runner-up Anthony Monteiro of Leominster (14.80) and Yong Cho of Newton South (14.90). BC High's Corey Thomas was fifth in 15.03.

Mansfield senior Mike McPherson took the shot put with a throw of 55 feet 9 inches. Hopkinton senior Cory Thalheimer was fourth with a throw of 51-11 3/4.

Sophomore Kamal Riley of Charlestown had a strong second-place finish in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.02. Teammate Omar Aden was second in the mile, running it in 4:13.19.

Charlestown 4 x 100 relay team added another second-place finish, only .20 seconds behind winner Middleton (Conn.).

In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Chris McConnell of Andover was fourth. His time of 11.15 was a bit slower than his second-place finish in the All-State track meet, but it was good enough to place above Westborough's Ryan Ruffing (sixth place), who had come in first in All-States.

The girls had their share of top performances as well.

North Reading's Shannon Conway won the 400, finishing in 55.92, more than a second faster than runner-up Sara Missert of Central Catholic.

In the long jump, Triton's Deanna Latham won with a leap of 18-8 1/4, while O'Bryant's Nakeisha Jones won the triple jump (39-0 1/2). The Newton South 4 x 800 relay team also notched a victory, finishing in 9:19.26.

Mansfield's Meghan Ferreira, a state champion in 100 hurdles, finished second in the event in 14.83, bettering her time of 14.90 from the state championship.

Massachusetts girls also turned in a pair of runner-up finishes, Haverhill's Samantha Stabile in the 200-meter run (25.67) and North Andover's Kirsten Kasper in the mile (4:53.22). Kasper's time was six seconds faster than her state-winning time last weekend.
