Jordan Botelho may be small, but he carries a big stick. The 5-foot-7-inch, 110-pound Old Colony junior shot a stunning 7-under-par 29 on the front nine at Acushnet River Valley Golf Course as the Cougars defeated West Bridgewater, 8.5-0.5, yesterday.
Botelho parred the first two holes, then birdied the next seven. Botelho's "accuracy, putting, and determination are unbelievable. He's the best all-around [golfer] I've had in 20 years," said Old Colony coach John Abaray.
Acushnet's final three holes on the front nine, according to Abaray, are very challenging and Abaray said Botelho was nervous.
It didn't show, as Botelho came up with birdies on the par-4 seventh (downhill dogleg left), par-3 eighth (an elevated green), and the 501-yard, par-5 ninth, where his final putt rolled around the cup and fell in.
Elsewhere, Norton defeated Dover-Sherborn, 256-282, at TPC Boston behind Peter Danko's 1-over 37; senior cocaptain Stephen Winslow shot a 1-under 35 to lead Concord-Carlisle over Waltham, 10.5-1.5, and into the state tournament for the seventh consecutive year; and Danvers, behind Matt Castanza's 1-over 36, got past Swampscott, 44.5-27.5.
