WARWICK, R.I. - For the second consecutive year, the Lincoln-Sudbury girls' cross-country team captured the Brown University North East Championship.
Three Warriors finished in the top 10 in the Championship girls' race, which was held at Goddard Memorial State Park yesterday. The 26th running of the races featured teams from New England, New York, and New Jersey.
Senior Ellie Hylton paced Lincoln-Sudbury, finishing fourth in 17 minutes 56.4 seconds. Sophomore Andrea Keklak (18:01.8) and freshman Corey Stock (18:02.6) followed close behind, in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Warriors coach Henry Phelan had seen this success before, but didn't enjoy it much last year. Phelan was at the helm of Bromfield, which was edged by L-S by a point.
"Everybody expected to do well," Phelan said. "This is a very experienced group and we're running in really our fourth serious race of the season."
Framingham senior Camille Murphy was the next best EMass finisher, finishing eighth in 18:10.1.
Recently crowned Hockomock League champions Mansfield won the boys' team title, despite placing only one runner in the top 10.
Mansfield coach Julie Collins considered not bringing her squad to Rhode Island because of fatigue concerns stemming from the league championship meet Tuesday.
Junior Patrick McGowan (16:02.9) led Mansfield by finishing 10th, and a bunched pack of Hornets a little further behind helped Mansfield secure the title. Sophomore Shayne Collins (16:16.1), seniors Patrick Grimes (16:17.9) and Kevin Meagher (16:18.3), and junior Brendan Boyle (16:32.3) finished in the top 20.
Collins was particularly pleased with Boyle, a newcomer to cross-country.
Earlier, Pembroke sophomore Heather Connick (18:30.4) won the girls' Division 1 varsity race, beating Holliston's Rosie Keogh (18:34.0) by nearly four seconds. Marian's Kelly Egan finished 10th in 19:28.0.
Concord-Carlisle's Caroline Kimball-Katz took fourth in the Division 2 varsity in 18:16.1. Her team finished seventh.
Paul Cina (16:07.5) and sophomore Ryan Kelley (16:08.5) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, leading Pembroke to a fourth-place finish in the Division 1 boys' varsity race. Holliston finished eighth.
In the boys' Division 2 varsity race, junior Andrew Herring (15:57.6) was the pacesetter for Lexington, which finished second.![]()
