Lexington is one step closer to attaining something no Middlesex League boys' soccer team has accomplished. After yesterday's 3-0 victory over host Stoneham, the Minutemen are two victories away from finishing with a perfect record.
The Minutemen (16-0) play Melrose at home Tuesday and at Burlington Saturday.
Lexington got on the board in the 13th minute. On a throw-in, the ball appeared to graze Max Swanson's head. Stoneham keeper David Riggillo tried to corral the header but it bounced off his hands and into the net.
"Both teams had some chances but we managed to convert on ours," said Lexington coach Dan Rudolph.
Lexington converted another chance late in the first half. Dan Smoot was tripped up in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Diego Garcia took the PK and buried it in the corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Despite the lopsided score, Stoneham got great play from its active keeper. Riggillo jumped out and caught just about every corner kick or cross that came his way.
Lexington keeper Zack Abdu-Glass was even more impressive. He directed the defense and made numerous jumping saves.
Most of the first half was played on Lexington's side of the field. The defense cleared most balls sent towards its keeper. The outstanding defense allowed one scoring chance in the game and contributed to Lexington's 11th shutout.
"Our back line was outstanding today," said Rudolph.
Lexington scored its final goal in the 37th minute of the second half. Swanson took a pass in the middle of the field, split defenders, then pushed the ball past Riggillo.
