ROUNDUP

Reading advances with second-half surge

A tie doesn't get you anywhere when tournament time rolls around - and for the 12th-seeded Reading field hockey team, which racked up six draws during the regular season, getting a win was the only way to keep the Rockets' season alive.

Though the game remained deadlocked through most of the second half, Reading surged ahead of fifth-seeded Salem to win 3-0 in MIAA Division 1 North tournament action.

Senior Kelly Hennessy registered two goals and Rachel McCarthy scored once for the Rockets (12-2-6) and goalkeeper Catie Murphy led a solid defensive front, holding the Witches scoreless.

"It was a nice team effort, up and down the field," Rockets coach Mim Jarema said. "Every kid that stepped on the field had to do her job, and they all did."

Division 1 South: Senior Taylor Silvestro tallied the winning goal in Walpole's 2-0 victory over Hingham.

Girls' soccer

Prep-Private: Senior Emily Little's two goals lifted Phillips Andover past Pingree, 4-0.

Nonleague: Pembroke defeated Bridgewater-Raynham, 3-0, courtesy of a two-goal performance by Hannah Earner.
