Latin Academy coach Mark Thomas used two words to describe his team's success: tradition and depth. Both played a part in the Dragons' convincing Boston City Swimming Championship win yesterday at Madison Park High.
The team's tradition includes winning 18 city titles in 19 seasons, and its depth led to points in every individual event, including the four it didn't win.
But the Dragons' main strength came from sweeping all three relays to finish with 137 points. Following were East Boston (73), O'Bryant (59), West Roxbury (15), and Madison Park (0).
"Everyone in the relays really stepped up," senior Rachel McGrath said. "Everyone works really good together, and we motivate each other."
McGrath was one of Latin Academy's top performers, winning the 200 individual medley (2:24.42) and 100 butterfly (1:04.20). Junior Justina Langone captured the 100 backstroke (1:08.10), finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (58.56), and swam two relays.
Other noteworthy performances came from O'Bryant's Corrado Addonisio, who finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.82) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.28), and Sergio Vergara, who broke an East Boston school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.89).
Dual County: No. 5 Westford (18-1, 9-0 league) needed T.J. Jann's 28 points and 14 rebounds to beat Newton South, 73-71. Tavone Wynder scored 37 points for the Lions.
Hockomock: Mike Byron scored his 1,000th career point but Oliver Ames fell to Mansfield, 86-67.
Middlesex: Hanell Velez had 43 points to pace Woburn past Reading, 85-66.
Patriot: Hingham's Mike Perry hit a 3-pointer to push Scituate to overtime, but Pat Collins's jumper at the buzzer gave the Sailors a 70-69 victory.
South Coast: No. 6 Wareham improved to 20-1 and locked up its third straight league title, beating Case, 75-34. Wareham's Jules Tavares scored 16.
Tri-Valley: Doug Schlehuber had 23 points, including a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, to help Norton (16-4) edge Dover-Sherborn, 55-52.
Prep-private: Erica Pagliarulo had four goals, including the winner in overtime, as Newton Country Day outlasted Berwick Academy, 4-3.
