L-S girls get the jump on Newton South
Usually when two nationally ranked teams meet in the regular season, it’s a pretty big deal. Not so for Lincoln-Sudbury girls’ cross-country coach Henry Phelan.
“It’s just a dual meet,’’ said Phelan, whose Warriors edged Newton South, 24-31, yesterday. “We don’t do anything differently. It is nice to win, but we are working for the big meets at the end of the season.’’
Entering the meet, Lincoln-Sudbury was 13th and Newton South 19th in the Harrier Super 25 national rankings.
Last season, Lincoln-Sudbury finished second in the state championships to Newton South.
“It is definitely a rivalry,’’ said Phelan. “The kids get excited for it . . . but as a coach you just treat it like a regular meet.’’
Lincoln-Sudbury had the top two finishers. Sophomore Corey Stock won in 15:49 and junior Andrea Keklak finished in 15:53.
The win kept Lincoln-Sudbury perfect at 4-0. Newton South fell to 3-1.
“We’re just going to keep training and trying to get stronger. It is all about the state meet in November,’’ Phelan said.
Regarding his team and Newton South, though, Phelan did say, “It looks like we’ll be back and forth again this season.’’
Norton 24, Medway 35 - Sophomore Erica Callahan finished second, but was the top finisher in an impressive team effort by the Lancers.
