In a field hockey game yesterday against Cape Ann foe Manchester Essex (11-0-1), host Amesbury (2-5-3) fought to prevent the Hornets from taking a lead, and managed to play to a scoreless draw.

Although neither team won, it felt like a win for the Indians.

The key to the Indians’ moral victory was “unity, commitment, and determination,’’ said coach Bethany Noseworthy, who was named head coach this season after the retirement of Gail Kelleher after 40 years. Kelleher had led the Indians to 398 victories, three North Sectional championships, and 15 Cape Ann League titles.

The Indians’ grass home field proved an advantage, as the Hornets normally play on turf.

The home team “came in thinking and believing, ‘Why can’t we be the team that makes the upset?’’ said Noseworthy.

Amesbury was able to target leading scorers, Amelia Burke and Amelia Cohen and shut them down. Senior goalie Lauren Joyce, in her first varsity appearance for Amesbury, made 23 saves.

Wellesley 4, Brookline 1 - Junior Leah Sessler led the Raiders with two goals.

Everett 1, Gloucester 0 - Junior Yasmine Akib scored the lone goal.

Peabody 1, Saugus 0 - Kate Teixiera scored off with six minutes left in the game.

Boys’ soccer
New Bedford 2, Attleboro 1 - The Whalers (9-0-1) got goals from Victor Ferreira and Karim Fernandes.

Bridgewater-Raynham 2, Brockton 1 - Trojan senior Tom Mullen tied the game in the second half, and Skylor Nelson scored the winning goal.

Lynnfield 2, Hamilton-Wenham 0 - Freshman Jake Atkinson scored his first career goal in a match between the two top Cape Ann teams.

Pentucket 2, Newburyport 1 - The Sachems recovered on goals by Jake Bacher and Matt Farrell, who scored the winner with two minutes remaining.

Girls’ soccer
Lynnfield 1, Hamilton-Wenham 0 - Junior midfielder Whitney Montesanto scored off a corner kick with 20 seconds left to lift the Pioneers (9-1-1) and qualify them for postseason play.

Woburn 1, Lexington 0 - Senior Callie Murphy had her sixth goal for the Tanners.
