The Acton-Boxboro field hockey team avenged last season’s MIAA Division 1 North quarterfinal loss with a 4-2 victory over the Wildcats at Weston yesterday.

“We lost to Weston in the tournament last season, so the girls definitely had some extra incentive this year,’’ said Acton-Boxboro coach Mae Shoemaker. “We certainly wanted to prove ourselves, but most of all we just wanted to continue playing like we had been all season.’’

Trying to live up to that standard is not as easy, although Shoemaker’s Colonials entered the game against last year’s state champions not only with an unblemished record, but with a perfect goals-against tally as well.

Acton-Boxboro had outscored its opponents, 35-0, this season. Many of those goals came from senior captain Alexa Sikalis, who has 19 goals and 5 assists.

“I think Alexa was a bit overlooked last year,’’ said Shoemaker. “She is having a huge year this season.’’

Sikalis opened the Colonials’ scoring and buried a penalty stroke in the second half. Her second goal gave Acton-Boxboro a 3-2 lead. Senior Julia Pochini iced the game with the Colonials’ fourth goal with 2:11 left.

The win moved Acton-Boxboro to 10-0-0, while Weston fell to 11-1-1. The teams are in different divisions of the Dual County League, so a rematch will only be in the state tournament.
