Undefeated Boston English claimed an intense 3-2 girls’ volleyball victory over host Latin Academy last night, beating the six-time defending champion to win the Boston City League title.

English (16-0) prevailed, 22-25, 25-13, 26-24, 23-25, 15-10, over Latin Academy (14-4).

“Our school has never won the city championship . . . They came close last year and [Carolynn Loya-Torres] got hurt in the last game. So this is definitely a well-awaited moment,’’ said English coach Hardy Mondesir.

Senior captain Loya-Torres helped the Blue & Blue break an early tie in the fifth game, but the Dragons never were more than a few points behind. Torres outshined 6-foot-2-inch Dragons blocker Christina Joseph by blasting a spike through her arms.

“It was a long way here but we finally made it,’’ said Loya-Torres, who notched the winning point on a spike. “It was a great match. We had more communication and were helping each other get the ball out. So it was challenging because they are a great team and they eliminated us last year, but we got revenge.’’

In the first game, Joseph (15 kills, 6 blocks) applied the offensive pressure for Latin Academy. The Blue & Blue then unleashed Loya-Torres (35 kills, 7 aces, and 3 blocks) as the game became a one-on-one duel.

“Against [Joseph], it was a big challenge because we were both really good players, but I had confidence in myself,’’ said Loya-Torres.

Loya-Torres barricaded the net to block Joseph, then Joseph soared above the net to easily set down several spikes. Once the Dragons gauged the placement of Loya-Torres’s kills and tips, they set up double and triple blocks and ended up winning the first game.

English reasserted its power and expertise in running away with the second game. The third game had a lot of tight play at the net, much involving Loya-Torres and Joseph, and English won by 2 points.

After Latin Academy won a tight fourth game, English secured the fifth game for the title.

“Latin has always been a challenge and I was looking forward to this game,’’ said English senior captain Unique Bridges. “We had a little bit of trouble with communication but at the end of the day we won the championship.’’

Sophomore Johanly Garcia-Amaro had 15 aces and sophomore Tracy Lynn Pagan 13 for English.

“It’s a dream come true,’’ said Mondesir. “I wanted to come and give these girls more than side-out volleyball. I wanted to them to come in and do bump, set, spike or more bump, set, down.

“I got them started and they put it together.’’
