Twelfth-seeded Brookline advanced to the Division 1 North quarterfinals in field hockey after conquering fifth-seeded Beverly, 2-1, yesterday at Salem State College.
Brookline (12-6-1) plays on after winning its first Bay State Conference Carey Division title.
“It was an incredible game and a great win. We just treated it like a regular game and played it to 100 percent,’’ said Warriors coach Kate Coleman.
With three minutes left in the second half, senior right wing Nicola Pedeschy (who led the Carey with 27 goals) took the ball all the way down the field and fired it into the net to break a 1-1 tie.
“We were both very competitive but it was our effective ball passing and communicating up the field that gave us the advantage,’’ Coleman said. “It was just our overall wanting it.’’
The Panthers (13-2-4) opened the scoring in the first half and held the lead until Brookline senior Michelle Li tied it in the second half.
Sophomore Meghan Zak made eight saves for the Warriors. The defensive line, made up of senior Kerry Knott and junior Emma Murphy, was key to the Warriors’ victory, said Coleman.
The Warriors will face host North Andover in the quarterfinals Sunday at noon.
