MARLBOROUGH - Last night’s state wrestling finals at Marlboro High School featured six of the best teams in Massachusetts. At night’s end, there was little doubt which was the king of the hill.
Franklin, last year’s Division 2 champion, handily defeated Springfield Central for the Division 1 title, 38-20.
“It’s an accomplishment for us, the kids, the program, and the team,’’ said coach Carmine Colace. “We’ve got a great group of seniors that go out with a big bang, winning a Division 1 and a Division 2 state title.’’
The Panthers (26-4) trailed, 10-7, going into the 130-pound bout, but Mickey Carbone beat Kadar St. Phard, 18-1, to give his team a 12-10 lead. The squads battled back and forth until Eric Deslauriers majored Anthony Brook at 160 pounds for a commanding 25-16 advantage.
“We figured that would be a close match,’’ said Colace, who had won eight titles at the Division 2 level. “He ended up majoring the kid and it was a big swing match for us.’’
Chris Dixon followed up with a major decision of his own, 15-6, over Anthony Williams at 171 pounds, to extend the lead to 29-16. The championship was clinched in the 215-pound match when Mike Hoey pinned Nate Shea 1 minute 15 seconds into the first period.
At an adjacent mat, North Andover took Franklin’s place as the Division 2 champion with a 38-18 win over Natick.
The Red and Blue jumped out to a 9-0 lead, thanks in part to Peter Gutierrez’s 4-0 win at 103 pounds over the event’s only female competitor, Danielle Coughlin.
The tide turned when 119-pounder Dan Lora, one of five sophomores who wrestled for North Andover (27-3-1), pinned Ethan Ziegler as the first period closed, giving his team a boost. The Scarlet Knights did not lose another match until Chris Funnell edged Garret Alter, 2-1, at 160 pounds.
“I knew what I had to do,’’ said Lora. “It feels great because it was our generation that won, all the sophomores.’’
Ryan Neals stopped any potential momentum for Natick (19-5-1) with a 7-6 nailbiter over Glen Duffy at 171 pounds, a victory that gave North Andover a 29-12 lead.
The Division 3 championship went down to the wire, as Wayland (25-4-1) nipped Pembroke, 28-27, in a match that was decided by the heavyweights.
Abe Freedberg held off Nick Morey, 7-5, at 285 pounds, giving his team the three points needed for the title.
“We came close the last two years, so to wrap it up my senior year is unbelievable,’’ said Freedberg. “I beat him before, so I knew a little bit about him. He gets tired fast, so I knew that if I got to the third period with him I could win it.’’
Wayland received an early 12-0 boost when Carter Shearer and Ryan Malloy pinned their opponents in the opening matches.![]()
