Katie Notarangelo scores 100th as Foxboro girls lacrosse routs King Philip, 13-3
The host Foxboro girls' lacrosse team defeated King Philip, 13-3, Friday, but there was something off about coach Brittany Jamieson-Sherry's squad. Then the coach subbed out junior midfielder Katie Notarangelo, the team's leading scorer, midway through the second half. "It's in your head and it's in everyone else's head," Jamieson-Sherry told Notarangelo on the sidelines. "Go in there and get it over with." "It" was the 100th goal of Notarangelo's scholastic career, and after finding the back of the net twice in the first 30 minutes of play she was sitting on 99. With 13:11 to go, she took a pass in the middle of the field, deked around a pair of KP defenders and put the ball in the lower left corner for the hat trick.( 05/03/2013 9:24 PM )

Maggie Hoffman of Avon notches 50th career win
Thursday's game might have looked like an easy victory for the Avon softball team, but it marked a milestone for senior Maggie Hoffman, who recorded her 50th career win in a 14-0 shutout against visiting Bristol County. "I work hard during the offseason and stay late at practice every day," Hoffman said, "I knew my 50th career win could come this year, so I've been working really hard to reach that." Hoffman struck out four, walked none, and contributed a home run and double as Avon improved to 12-1. "When I met Maggie she was in seventh grade and I thought she'd be good for JV," said Panthers coach Karen McCarthy. "Then I saw her pitch and said, 'You've got to be kidding me.' St. John's Prep (12-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard lit up in this one. Nick Bragole drove a solo home run into the neighboring lacrosse field in the top of the first inning. The drive gave Eagles starter Brandon Bingel a lead to protect early and it was a lead he would not relinquish. The senior struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings of work and sat the Hawks down in order on three occasions. It was a much different outing than Bingel had a week ago against BC High.( 05/01/2013 11:00 PM )

Duxbury boys' lacrosse escapes from Hingham
As the battle for the league title heats up, every game is huge, but even more between conference rivals. On Hingham's turf, No. 2 Duxbury came away with an 8-7 overtime victory Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Patriot League. The Green Dragons are 8-4 overall, but all of their losses have come against out-of-state schools. "It was a huge win," Duxbury coach Chris Sweet. "It goes a long way towards winning the league. It's usually always a tight game [against Hingham]." The history between the two teams has created a bit of rivalry. Before 2000, the Green Dragons rarely beat Hingham, but in the last decade they've dominated the No. 11 Harbormen. At 2:51 of overtime, senior attackmen JC LoConte (two goals, two assists) netted a man-up goal from 18 yards out for the win. "It's still such a heated rivalry," Sweet said. "But, it was a hard-fought game most importantly." ( 05/01/2013 7:35 AM )

Norwood High softball team committed to making a successful run
NORWOOD -- Carol Savino has coached the game, in various positions and communities, for 50 years, the last four at the helm of the varsity softball program at Norwood High. Two weeks ago, she realized that she had a pretty special group. It was a cold and rainy Friday afternoon, the final hours before spring vacation, and her Mustangs were not scheduled to play a game until the following Wednesday. So the 68-year-old Savino, normally a stickler for detailed, three-hour practices, made the workout optional. "They said they wanted to practice," Savino said. "Same thing with Monday [Patriots' Day]. I told them straight: 'You can have Monday off. Or you can practice. It's up to you.' And not one of them said they wanted Monday off." That level of commitment is a big reason why the Mustangs started the season 6-2. ( 04/28/2013 12:00 AM )

Acton's Megan Wiggins still scorching net in return to Bentley lacrosse program
Bentley women's lacrosse coach Carissa Medeiros never saw Megan Wiggins play the game at Acton-Boxborough Regional, where she was a second team Dual County League all-star as a senior. Even after Wiggins enrolled at Bentley, her freshman season ended abruptly because of back pain that required injections and physical therapy. "But when I first saw her try out as a red-shirt sophomore, Megan's stick skills just blew me away and I was impressed with her speed for a player of her size," recalled Medeiros. The graduate student, who netted a goal and added three assists Tuesday on senior night as the Falcons (11-4 overall, 9-2 Northeast-10) rolled to their fifth straight victory, toppling Merrimack, 19-10, ranks fourth in program history in goals (141) and points (200). Chrissy Gikas a senior sparkplug for unbeaten Danvers High softball
Chrissy Gikas dug in at the plate with her 5-foot, 2-inch frame and stared down the Lynn English pitcher with a calm, yet intimidating focus and went to work. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, the Danvers High senior captain put a ball into play and her bloop single landed between a trio of Lynn English players in short center. Before anyone had blinked, she had stolen second base, and then third, before scoring the game's first run. She finished the afternoon, a 13-0 victory, with three hits, a walk, a double, four RBIs, four runs scored, and two stolen bases. And she really put on a show out in the field at second base. Her leadership has helped spark Danvers to a 7-0 start. ( 04/28/2013 12:00 AM )

St. Sebastian's junior slugger Justin Bellinger turns heads with prodigious power
NEEDHAM -- It doesn't take a miracle to keep St. Sebastian School slugger Justin Bellinger off the basepaths, but there are times when it can feel that way. "God bless the team that can get him out four times," said Belmont Hill coach Michael Grant, shaking his head. The 17-year-old Bellinger is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound junior first baseman and pitcher with a powerful left-handed swing and 90 mile-per-hour fastball from the left side that make him one of the top high school prospects in the country. He committed to Vanderbilt University more than two years ago -- before his freshman season at St. Seb's -- and his name is already well-known by Major League scouting departments who will have to wait another year before they have the opportunity to draft him. Weymouth's Cam MacDonald stars at the plate and on the mound for AIC
Cam MacDonald is in the midst of his finest season on the diamond at American International College. Yet, a shining moment from his senior year at Weymouth High still resonates with MacDonald and his former teammates: the final out of their Bay State Carey Division title-clinching victory over Braintree four years ago. A team captain who played second base and took a regular turn on the mound, MacDonald's last pitch resulted in a grounder to fellow Brett Julian, who fired the ball to first baseman Mike Laracy to secure the win. Laracy and Julian are senior pitchers at Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College while MacDonald, a redshirt junior, is putting terrific numbers for the Yellow Jackets. . Title IX case in California

Title IX battle looms in North Reading
The softball team plays nearly 2½ miles from the high school campus, and players have to provide their own transportation to home games and practices. The baseball team plays adjacent to the high school, and has had access to amenities the softball team lacks: dugouts, locker rooms, and bathrooms. All this was expected to change with construction of a new $122.7 million middle/high school complex, a project that is currently underway in North Reading. But somehow, two fields -- one for baseball, the other for softball -- became two for baseball, which for some people in town, was just too much. The potential for a complaint to be filed over violations of Title IX, the federal law that requires equal treatment of male and female athletes, looms as a last resort if, as one of the organizers of North Reading Citizens for Equality said, school officials do not do the right thing.
