Defending state champion Milford was an all-around force on the softball diamond Friday as the Scarlet Hawks defeated host Hopkinton, 10-0. Senior pitcher and reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Shannon Smith threw a one-hitter and went 4 for 4.
Milford (7-0) snapped Hopkinton’s home winning streak at 24 games and handed the Hillers their first loss of the season. The win was Milford’s 32d straight.
“I was focused a lot on movement and keeping hitters off balance and not going to the same spots over and over again,” said Smith, who has committed to Kentucky. “I knew they were a good team and I was expecting it to be a tough game for us.”
Smith struck out 18 and allowed one walk. Hopkinton’s Kayla Sullivan broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning when she singled on a line drive to right field.
The game was dedicated to former Apponequet coach and late pitching guru Peter Looney, with all proceeds going to the Looney Legacy Foundation, which supports melanoma research.
