Hingham baseball coach Frank Niles was the first to admit that it wasn’t the prettiest victory, but that didn’t matter. The bottom line was that the Harbormen beat Masconomet, 2-1, in the Division 2 EMass championship game at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton and punched their ticket to the state title game.
Despite solid pitching from Chieftains pitcher Speros Varinos, who struck out 11 batters, Hingham took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Austin Irvin struck out swinging and John Carlson flied out to right field, the next pair of hitters got on base for the Harbormen because of catcher’s interference. Matt Glenzel followed with a single which loaded the bases and Stephan White walked to put Hingham on the board.
