Nicole Jorgensen leads Quincy to win in girls basketball

With the loss of five league all-stars from last season, Quincy girl’s basketball head coach Jeff Bretsch knew the Presidents had a tall task in repeating their run to the Division 1 South semifinals.

But in a gritty, defense-oriented battle against Brockton, Quincy escaped with a 34-31 win on the road, as the Presidents moved to 3-0 behind an historic performance from center Nicole Jorgensen.

The 6-foot-4-inch freshman broke two Presidents records Monday, collecting 26 rebounds and 12 blocked shots to go along with 7 points.

“She was just controlling the paint back there,” said Bretsch. “She wasn’t hesitant. I liked the confidence she showed tonight. She was aggressive in attacking opposing players, and did a nice job of moving her feet, staying disciplined, and defending the rim for us.”

Jorgensen’s 26 rebounds broke the record held by recent graduate Kiley McDonald, who had 25 rebounds in a 62-54 tournament loss to Taunton in the 2011 Division 1 South tournament.

The freshman’s 12 blocks, Bretsch said, dwarfed the previous record of six.
