Central Catholic pulled away near the end of the first half and stayed in command for good, as the No. 4 Raiders defeated visiting North Andover, 70-60, Tuesday night.
Up, 26-24, with just over 1 minute to play in the second quarter, Central Catholic went on a 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from senior point guard Lucas Hammel before the buzzer.
“I thought defensively we were immense,” said Central Catholic coach Rick Nault, whose game plan was to shut down North Andover star big men Isaiah Nelsen and Chris Bardwell.
Central Catholic (15-3, 12-1 MVC) is in sole possession of first place in the Merrimack Valley Conference. North Andover is 14-3 (12-2 MVC). Hammel finished with 11 for the Raiders, while Nick Cambio added 22 points and 11 rebounds. Bardwell was the high scorer for North Andover with 17, while junior Brendan Miller added 16.
Braintree 59, Weymouth 53— The Wamps (10-7) secured a berth in the Division 1 South state tournament, and coach Bob Crook earned his 300th career win.
Sharon 89, Oliver Ames 71— Junior guard James Fritzon powered the Eagles (10-7) with 32 points and junior guard Brian Mukasa added 31.
Pope John 54, St. Clement 39— Tigers coach Shawn Thornton picked up his 100th career win on the road. Thornton coached for seven years for the Anchormen. ‘‘It was bittersweet to get the win at my old stomping ground,’’ he said.
Clarification: The MIAA’s decision Monday to allow individual sectional qualifiers into the state meets this weekend did not include relay teams. A Globe story Tuesday incorrectly said relay teams were included in the decision but swim tournament director Pete Foley said “logistics and the meet time line” prohibit adding additional relay teams.
