Justine Gaziano was the only freshman on the varsity girls’ basketball team at Natick High last season. She opened the season playing both spots in the backcourt, but six games in, the 5-foot-9 Gaziano permantly seized the starting spot at the point.
“I was a little nervous,” she admitted.
“She was young,” said Natick coach Dan Hinnenkamp. “She didn’t know how she’d handle it.” It didn’t take long for Gaziano to make an impact.
“Justine wants to learn,” said assistant coach Kirk Buschenfeldt. “She’s like a sponge. She wants to be the best.”
This season, Gaziano has propelled the Redhawks to a 4-1 start, averaging 19.8 points, five assists and four rebounds per game. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
