Burlington girls skate by Watertown/Belmont, 2-1

It was just over a month ago that the Burlington girls’ hockey team dropped a 5-4 nail-biter to their Middlesex League rival Watertown/Belmont. The tough loss served as motivation for the Red Devils when the two teams met Thursday afternoon.

“We were anxious to play them again,” said Red Devils coach Marty Conley. “I told the team that in order to be a good team, we need to be able to beat the best.”

And that’s what they did. Senior Krista Toscano scored the winner 6:45 into the third period to lead host Burlington over the ninth-ranked Raiders, 2-1, and into the state tournament for the second consecutive season.

Toscano, who Conley says “has ice water in her veins,” raced past a pair of Watertown players and picked the top left corner on a breakaway to give Burlington (9-4-1) the lead.
