There was much more than a trophy on the line Thursday night in the championship game of the Springfield Cathedral Tournament. The showdown between host Cathedral (Springfield) and Malden Catholic was a crucial measuring-stick game between two Super 8 contenders.
The fourth-ranked Panthers scored three second-period goals to take down top-ranked MC, 5-2, in each team’s final regular season game before the postseason.
“We couldn’t have ended the year with a better opponent, with a better win,” said Cathedral coach Brian Foley. “We’ve had a great regular season. This game was a good confidence-booster, we’re confident that we can play with anybody in the state.”
