CC’s Zenevitch tops off a grand evening
Katie Zenevitch knows how to celebrate a special occasion in style.
The Central Catholic senior knocked down a pair of free throws to give her club a 55-53 win over visiting Merrimack Valley rival Andover last night in a game in which she grabbed the 1,000th rebound of her career.
Zenevitch, the school’s all-time leading scorer, finished with game highs of 35 points and 23 rebounds.
“I think this was a huge game for [Katie],’’ said Central coach Sue Downer. “[Who else would] I want taking those two fouls shots than her?’’
With 20 seconds remaining, Andover freshman Devon Caveney sank one of two free throws to tie the score at 53. But with 6.5 seconds remaining, Zenevitch drew the foul.
The Raiders trailed, 14-6, after the first quarter, not scoring until the game was more than four minutes old. They rallied in the second, but Andover (7-1) held a 24-20 lead at the half.
Central Catholic (7-1) went on an 8-point tear to kick off the third, earning its first lead of the game. The Raiders shut down the combined explosive Andover duo of junior guard Natalie Gomez (11 points) and sophomore guard Nicole Boudreau (10). Boudreau scored 39 points in schools’ previous meeting.
Bishop Fenwick 60, Austin Prep 56 - Sarah James scored a basket and made a tying free throw with seven seconds left in regulation and the host Crusaders were able to pull away from the Cougars in overtime.
Amy Pelletier (11 points), Fenwick’s top scorer, dropped a 3-pointer early in overtime to give the Crusaders the lead for good.
Stoneham 58, Melrose 57 - Marisa Cataldo scored the winner in the second overtime as the Spartans edged the Raiders to improve to 6-0 in the Middlesex League. Cataldo scored a team-high 12 points.
North Attleboro 51, Sharon 45 - The Red Rocketeers were boosted by Jill Cullen, who pumped in a game-high 19 points.
Fenway 68, Madison Park 32 - Freshman point guard Tajanay Veiga had 18 points, 17 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals for the winners.
Latin Academy 56, Nazareth 36 - Robi Cardoso and Davetta Kenner each scored 21 points to lead the Dragons to victory.
Chelsea 69, Whittier 48 - Cesar Castro scored a team-high 23 points and dished out 10 assists as the visiting Red Devils routed the Wildcats to remain undefeated (4-0).
Madison Park 65, Fenway 49 - Seniors David Campbell (20 points, 15 rebounds) and Jamal McCollum (15 points, 12 rebounds) helped the visiting Cardinals cruise.
New Mission 72, Brighton 67 - Ousman Drame (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Osmel Odena (15 points, 13 assists) each had a double-double as the host Titans improved to 8-0. Brighton’s Charlie Ned scored a game-high 33 points.
West Roxbury 73, O’Bryant 65 - Roger Paul scored 18 points and Jason Hall and Sterling Brown each contributed 14 for the Raiders.![]()
