The second-ranked Central Catholic boys’ basketball team bounced back from its first Merrimack Valley Conference loss in 53 games to defeat crosstown rival Lawrence for the second time this season, 57-53, last night at Lawrence High School.

Sophomore guard Tyler Nelson scored 14 points to lead the Raiders, who dropped their first game, to Lowell, last Friday.

“I think sitting in that locker room after that Lowell game, in which Lowell absolutely took it to us, these kids, to a man, said ‘let’s not let this happen again,’ ’’ said Central Catholic coach Rick Nault, whose squad improved to 16-1.

“It’s a very determined group that I’ve got. I’ve had a lot of good teams in the past. I don’t think I’ve ever had as hard a working team as I have right here and they truly believe in each other. We had a couple of great days of practice after Friday night and we felt pretty good coming in today.’’

The Raiders went from a man-to-man defense to zone and jumped to a 10-point lead after being tied at the half, 26-26.

The 20th-ranked Lancers (10-3), who only scored 8 points in the third, managed to cut the lead to 3 points late in the fourth, but never got any closer.

Lawrence’s speed and athleticism gave the Raiders problems in the first half, as senior point guard Franklin Martinez was able to get into the lane and create opportunities for his team. But the Lancers couldn’t keep up the momentum in the second half.

Martinez finished with 11 points to lead Lawrence, who also received 9 points apiece from freshman Luis Torres and sophomore Roberto Speing.

Oliver Ames 75, Stoughton 67 - Junior guard Andrew Reardon’s game-high 22 points led the unranked Tigers over the third-ranked Black Knights at North Easton.

Senior guard Nick Bruha scored 16 and senior center Jeff Babbitt had nine rebounds and four blocks for Oliver Ames.

BC High 62, Boston Latin 57 - The No. 7 Eagles (13-4) were led by Jameilen Jones, who had 21 points.

Charlestown 78, Latin Academy 55 - The No. 17 Townies (12-3) were led by Tyrese Hoxter (20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists), Omar Orriols (12 points, 11 rebounds), and Taris Wilson (10 points, eight rebounds).

Chelsea 82, Northeast 54 - Senior Sean Quiroz had 27 points and eight assists for the Red Devils (12-6).

Girls’ basketball

Medford 47, Everett 38 - No. 19 Mustangs (12-5) were sparked by sophomore guard Sarah Donnelly’s 18 points.

Boys’ hockey

Blue Hills 8, South Shore Voc-Tech 2 - The Warriors (10-4-1) clinched their 14th straight Mayflower League title as brothers Josh and Nick Edwards combined for six goals and four assists.

Girls’ hockey

Ursuline 5, Archbishop Williams 1 - Bears senior Delia O’Malley scored two goals.
