Play of the Game

By Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff

Billerica scored twice in the final 10.2 seconds of Friday's game against rival Andover to emerge with an improbable 9-8 victory that brought the Merrimack Valley Conference title home with the Indians.

Andover boasted an 8-7 lead after Peter Hanson scored on a long bounce shot with 2:17 to play. Unable to net the tying goal on an initial possession, Billerica got the ball back and called timeout with 19.5 seconds to play.

Junior Jeff Scarfo came rumbling out of the alley and put together a fantastic individual effort to get in front of the net, dodge some defenders, and unleash a quick shot that beat Andover netminder Dan Powers to tie the game with 10.2 seconds to play.

Everyone in the attendance was bracing themselves for another overtime battle betwen these squads, but Billerica won the ensuing face-off and Lanny Ellis ended up with the ball near midfield. The junior took a few strides before lobbing a perfect 20-yard feed to Greg Melaugh outside the right post. Melaugh put a quick shot on net and scored with 1.3 seconds to play as Billerica stunned Andover, 9-8.
