Opening drives
Two new videos are online featuring the opening drives for both Wayland and Acton-Boxboro. That's the first 18 1/2 minutes of play, overall, given the long treks by both sides.
Wayland's march spans 17 plays as the Warriors trek to the Acton-Boxboro 1 before a false start penalty backs them up and sophomore quarterback Jeff Brewington -- who previously completed his first five passes during his first varsity start -- is ultimately intercepted in the end zone by Acton's Dave Margolius with 29.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Also notice on the video that Wayland running back Brian Flynn breaks free on a 70-yard jaunt off an option toss in the early going, but the play was called back due to holding. The penalty and the interception proved costly for the Warriors, who never advanced past the Acton 40 the rest of the game.
Acton-Boxboro takes over at its own 20 following the interception and marches 80 yards on 15 plays before Trevor Jeanson rumbles in on a 1-yard plunge with 3:32 remaining in the half. All of the plays on the drive stay on the ground and only two went for double digits in yardage. The Colonials ate up ground in bite-sized chunks, something that helped A-B wear down a larger Wayland defensive front.
