Hockey: 'Cats claw NDA
The Globe's Amanda Bruno checks in with a recap after Milton skated past Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) in tournament action this afternoon:
girls' hockey > division 2
Milton 6, Notre Dame (Hingham) 2
MILTON -- Junior Mary Carmody sent a floater from the blue line early in the game that somehow found its way into the net, setting the tone as top-seeded Milton ousted No. 16 Notre Dame of Hingham, 6-2, in a Division 2 girls’ hockey first-round contest at Max Ulin Rink Thursday.
The Wildcats (15-0-3) will face eighth-ranked Braintree in the quarterfinals Sunday at UMass-Boston.
“Pretty much the game plan remains the same," said Milton coach Christine Gurskis. “I always tell the girls... one game at a time, one period at a time, one shift at a time, and don’t look too far ahead. The thing with the tournament is everybody starts off 0-0 again, a clean record, and on any given night anyone can win so you know they just have to play their game and pretty much nothing changes.”
Milton's game plan was to come out shooting and the Wildcats put up three quick goals on the board (scored by Carmody (goal, assist) and sophomores Katie Higgins and Brianna Kelly (goal, 2 assists).
After the hat trick of goals, Notre Dame goalie Kristen Frano was lifted in favor of Jackie Zais, but she couldn't quite stop the bleeding.
The Wildcats scored one more time with 1:06 to go in the first period on a tally by Shana Indelicato (goal, 2 assists) as she stole the puck from the Cougar defense and capitalized of their mistake.
In the second frame, Milton struck again. Kelly sped down the left lane and quickly dished the puck to Bennett on the right side. Bennett somehow poked it through Zais then fell and slid across the ice with the home crowd roaring after the play.
“Everybody had a really good game,” said Gurskis. "I was able to play three lines tonight and everybody stepped up and played extremely well.
"When you get an early lead like that you kind of get the momentum and you see the other team kind of fizzle a little bit. Notre Dame played a hard game; they outplayed us towards the end of the game in the zone and put a couple of goals in.”
Notre Dame had a lot of chances to score throughout the game, particularly on the power play, but Milton netminder Anna Mandell was a brick wall in net as she frustrated the Cougar offense until they finally scored in the third period.
Sophomore Julianna Simmons and junior Michelle Brady contributed a pair of goals to give NDA fans something to cheer about.
