Now what?

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff October 3, 2008 10:01 PM

Hey, just because your humble servant is in LA doesn't mean we're not scoreboard watching from afar. We didn't have the guts to pick Brockton in the Forsberg 5 this week, but we did mention that these are exactly the type of games the Boxers tend to get hyped up for. We still didn't think they'd topple No. 1 St. John's Prep, especially not by two touchdowns.

So, another week, another changing of the guard at the top of the Globe Top 20 football poll seems imminent. Once again, we'll solicit your thoughts. Click the "full entry" link below to vote in our latest "Who should be No. 1?" poll and leave a comment with your thoughts.

  1. i dont care what you say xaverian is top five. their defense has not allowed a point in four games remember brocktons only touchdown was on a kickoff return and with phelan having a two tocuhdown performance tonight the offense is a lot better off than people give it credit.

    Forsberg's response:

You can call Xaverian a top 5 squad, but only if you believe Duxbury is a top 4 squad.

  1. Brockton pounded St. John's, who pounded Everett, who pounded Dracut, who beat Brockton. What are these kids in high school? (Oh, yeah). Reading, Wakefield, and Melrose are all looking pretty good in the Middlesex. How about a little recognition?

  1. brockton beat st. john's, bc high beat brockton, bc high is now definitely #1 hands down...dont even say dartmouth, look at their schedule compared to bc high's...

  1. st johns has to still be a top 5 team. they beat up on what seemed like an unstoppable force (you could call them a dynasty maybe) on a Monday and 5 days later played against a tough team.

  1. BC High should be #1. they have one of the toughest schedules in the state and they continue to win. Dartmouth is the most overrated team in the state and has not impressed anyone so far this year. They do not deserve #1 because they were good last year.

  1. if dartmouth is #1 thats rediculous. they play an awefull scheduall. BC High has played, and dominated, two top 10 teams already

  1. BC High pounded Brockton by 3 touchdowns, who pounded St. John's Prep by 15 points, who pounded Everett by 13 points, who pounded Dracut by 22 points, who beat Brockton. Dartmouth isn't even in the mix. Just look at their ice cream schedule. BC High on the other hand, 7 of the 10 teams they face in the regular season(Brockton, Andover, Acton-Boxboro, Everett, Cambridge, Xaverian, St.John's Prep, and Catholic Memorial) are in the Top 20. BC High is definitely the number 1 team in the state, without a doubt.

  1. BC High is number 1. And shouldnt prep now drop down below xaverian. i mean prep did lose to an unranked team. at least xaverian lost to the number 8 team.

  1. 1. BC High 2. SJP 3. Everett 4. Dartmouth 5. Duxbury 6. Xaverian
Chris, you clearly don’t like Xaverian that much. You always seem to be talking down about them, any particular reason? This is coming from a regular high school football fan.

Posted by Mike October 4, 08 02:27 PM
  1. How can you not say X is in the top 5? They have beaten Brockton, who has ranked higher by you, mr. foresberg, at the time of the game, 34-6. BC High only beat them 28-7, and the one touchdown that Brockton scored was on a kickoff. The Xaverian defense hasn't allowed a touchdown in four games, and they have a week off until the big matchup against Everett. Everett will be coming off a game with BC High, which i believe will favor X. You guys are all high and mighty on BC High, but i would like to remind you of another X team that went under the radar to destroy BC High. Two years ago, BC High was undefeated coming into the matchup against X. X went on to beat them, i believe by a score of 41-6. Then X went on to beat prep 35-0. I wouldnt be too surprised to see something like that happend again, and when it does, maybe Foresberg will give Xaverian some credit, because for some reason, the Globe never does give X credit. You better be ready to eat your words

  1. Give Xaverian some credit...enough is enough. The defense hasnt let up a point in the last four games. Last year is completely irrelevant to this years rankings. And X would smoke Duxbury if they played em again. Just give the Hawks what they deserve. watch out for them

  1. Gloucester nailed Beverly last week 35 - 0. Killed Barnstable 67 - 6 this week. Any questions?

Posted by brainfix October 5, 08 02:13 AM
  1. Give it to BC High for six days until EVERETT does what everybody knows that they will. As far as the Duxburys and the Walpoles are concerned, well #5 is #1 for teams not in Div. 1

    Posted by BERC1 October 5, 08 06:03 AM
  1. everett egals could beat melrose high

Posted by joe October 5, 08 09:07 AM
  1. if you continue to talk about who is the best in EMASS, you might consider including Gloucester in that conversation. The usual consensus is that to be ranked no.1 you must be in Div.1,well,all that may not be the case anymore. I thought Gloucester was overlooked in the final rankings last year at no.3. After seeing what they did to a very decent Div.1 team in Barnstable i think any ranking lower than the top five is not only a disservice to an amazing team and program, but, also a disservice to the readers who want to know who is the best and when and where can they see them. The love affair with Everett,St.Johns, who incidentally were handled fairly easily by Gloucester in the preseason, and BC High andBrockton must stop. It is entirely possible that the best team in EMASS is in Div.2 and is located up on Cape Ann. Just ask Barnstable how good they are.

  1. Johnny Boy give Duxbury some credit:
The Dragons beat Xaverian in every aspect of the game. DiBona ran all over them Cross made all the big throws especially on the game winning drive Duxbury came up with several big plays on defense that gave the Duxbury offense a chance
to come back. Did you go to the game or did you read an article the next day in the paper. You clearly couldn't have gone to the game with a statement like that.

Posted by hs fan October 5, 08 02:33 PM
  1. how in the world does prep only drop down 2 spots after getting embarrased by brockton. and dartmouth isnt even close to being the team they were last year with toddman. theres clearly bias in these rankings.

Posted by footballfan October 5, 08 02:44 PM
  1. Without a doubt BC High. They have the toughest schedule and have beaten 3 top 20 teams already and is gonna get more. As for globe2 saying Xaverian is better for scoring more points against Brockton, BC played Brockton in the middle of a tropical storm so Kiley couldn't put the ball in the air and they still dominated. End of story.

Posted by gold eagle October 5, 08 07:59 PM
  1. "And X would smoke Duxbury if they played em again." I would hope so, Duxbury is a small town that plays in Division 2A. Xaverian is a regional sports power with the ability to recruit as much talent as they need. Xaverian got beat the first time they played Duxbury and it was not a game where Duxbury got alot of lucky breaks. Rather it was a well played and well coached game. Xaverian fans have a right to be proud of their program, Xaverian has some awesome sports teams, but the game is won and lost on the field and the funny thing is that Xaverian also plays Duxbury in Lacrosse and the last I checked, Duxbury was the Divison 1 State Champion. Not bad for a small town next to the ocean.

    I'd say Duxbury number 2.
    Taunton #3
    Everett

  1. BCH is number one. Dartmouth, Everett, and a handful of others are very good (Gloucester, Duxbury, SJP, AB, X, etc.), but BCH has played the tougher schedule and should be ahead of Dartmouth. Very silly to put Dartouth number one. By end of season, there will be a clear cut number one though, and that's all that matters is who's left standing at the end.

Posted by Bob DCL October 6, 08 10:39 AM
  1. Hey Jack,I agree with you on BC High, Everett and Dartmouth in the top five. Don't know about Taunton, and as for Duxbury being #2? While Duxbury is talented and athletic, there are simply too many bigger, deeper teams out there to justify Duxbury being ranked so high.

  1. foresburg is a puss

Posted by cj pars October 6, 08 01:16 PM
  1. umm the only reason duxbury won was because of a roughing the kicker call, half the x defense was on the sidelines cramping, and a backup corner was playing when the hail marry pass was thrown on 4th and 9. x would beat the crap out of duxbury if they played again. and prep is clearly not that good. anyone who watched them play brockton can easily see that.

Posted by xmen October 6, 08 06:53 PM
  1. xmen. Games are won on the field and no single play should decide a contest. That said - Xaverian has good teams and good athletes but no matter how you slice it - Xaverian will not play Duxbury again this year, so it just sounds like sour grapes when you grouse about how thing would be different if this or that would have changed. Frankly if I was unkind I might ask why half your defense was on the bench due to menstrual cramps. But I will avoid the temptation to do so...... ;)

Posted by karnak October 6, 08 08:53 PM
  1. Xaverian lost to Duxbury. That much is over. But they should at least be in the top 5 after crushing Brockton, especially since St. Johns Prep lost to Brockton. And I do agree that Xaverian deserves a little more credit then you have given them.

Posted by hotnut October 6, 08 09:44 PM
  1. haha who cares about the duxbury game im pretty sure it doesnt matter at all toward the run for the state championship because the difference is xaverian will have a chance to play for the D1 superbowl (the only superbowl that counts) and duxbury wont so that doesnt matter the slightest.

Posted by Deff not from Xaverian October 7, 08 09:04 AM
  1. To Deff not from Xaverian,

Whatever...But keep this in mind - you are assuming that the xmen go undefeated the rest of the year. No one can be sure of that - especially in football. So good luck the rest of the year. Oh and one simple point to ponder, if Xaverian should win it all, by what theory should anyone rank Xaverian over Duxbury - the team that beat them? D1 or not you still might not get the number 1 ranking in the state and there is no way you could ever play Duxbury again this year to prove your superiority. Talk about frustration.

Posted by Karnak October 7, 08 02:57 PM
  1. so according to maxpreps xaverian is the number 5 team in the state and according to highschoolsports.net xaverian is the number 2 team in the state. and they use a system of annalyzing teams strength of schedule, points scored, points allowed, and power raknings to rate each team. now lets think about what the boston globe does to rank teams, oh yeah its just one mans biased opinion.

Posted by globerankingssuck October 7, 08 08:25 PM
  1. forsberg is a fool, dont act lk the duxbury game was you guys dominating us it went down to the last play you morons

Posted by franktTHEtank October 7, 08 09:50 PM
  1. Nice name frank the tank.

    but to Karnak
You did beat us but the D1 superbowl winner is the best in the state not the 2A winner because the person you could play in the superbowl is most likely a team that has 1 or 2 good kids that think they are the man because they run show in D2a

Posted by Deff not from Xaverian October 8, 08 11:44 AM
  1. To Deff not from xaverian, i bet that you are the kind of kid everyone makes fun of on the football team. Usually it is all the kids that dont play who talk smack on these message boards, so you should be able to back up your talk but i doubt you could.

Posted by franktTHEtank October 8, 08 07:10 PM
  1. Deff not from Xaverian,
Xaverian still lost, down to the last play or not - Xaverian still lost. Giants score at the last minute of the Superbowl - they win - nothing changes that outcome. Adam Vinateri kicks a field goal to win the Superbowl - Pats win - nothing else matters. Let me say this again - slower so that you can understand it - Xaverian...still... LOST. What about losing don't you understand? That is what will affect Xaverian's ranking, period, if Xaverian runs the table - a big if and other teams i.e. BC High loses. Then Xaverian should be considered for a higher ranking - so keep it cool until Thanksgiving and we'll see what happens then. By the way if you are Deff not from Xaverian - why did you say "You beat us" and not "them"? - just wondering.

Posted by Karnak October 8, 08 08:53 PM
  1. Haha karnak maybe i said us because i am on the team if that thought ever crossed your mind. Only time can tell. and to frankTHEtank i get to go to practice everyday with the satisfaction that i am trying to make my team better so what if i am only on the punt team. special teams makes the biggest plays during the game anyway. Im going to be getting a letter this year so i do play.

ps i am also on the kick off team

Posted by Deff not from Xaverian October 9, 08 08:45 AM
  1. Deff not for xaverian
you complain about everything. thats the epitome of xaverian...rich, spoiled kids who lick the silver spoon. why dont you grow a sack instead of only being ranked 14th? btw foresburg is a genious this is his profession and he knows much more about high school football too. Your team is ont that good

Posted by frankTHEtank October 9, 08 11:01 AM
  1. Xaverian-overated
we beat xaverian week one and will be more then willing to do it again.
I ran all over them and they cant handle the dragons

Posted by hawkeye October 9, 08 11:02 AM
  1. xaverian should stop getting so mad about duxbury beating them in two of the toughest sports in high school. all this talk about how the big "xmen" shouldve beat them...Duxbury has kept them from winning a state title in lax the past 5 years an they finally get a chance to rough them up in football an cant finish they need to stop making excuses and take the lost...Div 2a div 1 div. 4 wats the difference regardless a football is football the best 11 man team wins

By definition if USC won the national championship they will be number 1. so what exactly is your point?
