Shootout: CM vs. CC

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff March 4, 2009 10:53 PM

LOWELL -- Check out highlights from the exciting Super 8 shootout between Catholic Memorial and Central Catholic at Tsongas Arena.

CM prevailed with a 3-1 advantage in the shootout to win the game.

And what's your take on the controversial goal waived off against Central Catholic's Steve Balsamo? Was it a goal? Good decision to overturn by the officials?

  1. I was at the game. The penlaty shot call was borderline, but the ref at the net called the goal good and the ref at the blue line called him in for a discussion and called it off. It was tough to take a call reversal without instant replay in such a tight game. There were definitely some upset Central fans.

  1. It was close and could have gone either way, but why did the lead official call it a goal and then it was waved off after he conferred with the back official? Seems that the official who had the call saw it as a goal and was in perfect position.

  1. referees were clearly intimidated by Hansoon. Pretty sad seeing one of them is a Hockey East referee.

  1. Awful call back goal (of course after Hanson made a stink about it). Should have been a goal! Where is the rules and why doesn't the MIAA put them in their program???? Or do they just make them up as they go along, which is what it looks like....

  1. It was a good call, once a player begins a shootout attempt they must continue to move towards the goal and advance the puck, once the CC player stopped the shootout attempt is over. Great call by the back official.

  1. It was borderline, but it's a high school hockey game. You can't give the kid a goal, then confer with a ref that was behind the play, and overturn it. Especially with the lack of a replay system. It was borderline, but you have to give it to him, especially have initially calling a goal.

  1. I doubt yoyr the Calude Julien and the rule states the puck has to be moving continuiously FORWARD, the rule is place to prevent shooters from circling the net or stopping in moving the puck side to side for an easy goal. Nice try Notclaude

  1. Central was robbed!!! NCAA rule book states Rule 4.6b-c for shootout.........
Once the player taking the shot has touched the puck, it must be kept in motion toward the opponent's goal line.......It does not state that the player can't stop only that the puck must stay in motion. Claude Julien go back to Pee Wee's. They should deffinitely stop Hanson at the door and make him empty his pockets. I bet we find a few Ref's and some MIAA committee members.

  1. No goal, but some good creativity with the puck.
