Division 1 Dish

Posted by Mike Carraggi, Globe Correspondent October 15, 2009 09:30 PM

As we send out an APB for Tom Brady.....

One of the most exciting aspects of Division 1 football this year has been the addition of the Merrimack Valley Conference (Large). Billerica, Chelmsford, Central Catholic and Andover all stand tall at 4-1, but with league play starting up, that will all change.

The MVC was already so powerful that the MIAA broke up the conference into the Large and the Small, the latter of which resides in Division 2. Maybe the powers that be should break the Division 1's portion into a MVC (Supersize)?

Please note that, unlike other conferences, the Large will not have a champion based off league record, but instead league points. A Large team that defeats a Small team gets one point, and a victory against a fellow Large team gets two points. At the end of the season, the Large team with the most points gets in.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR...

Game of the week:

(Nonleague) – Xaverian at Everett, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Any swagger that the Crimson Tide may have lost over the last season-and-a-half could be earned back with a win over top-ranked Xaverian. The Hawks have been the favorites to win the division since training camp, and as long as they don't get completely annihilated, they should remain the favorites.

As far as the X's and O's go, Everett has a little less size in the trenches than in the past, which may present matchup nightmares against Xaverian's line of wooly mammoths. The Hawks should feature a steady diet of running backs Joe Colton and Matt Tuleja to begin the game, and when the linebackers start cheating up, quarterback Alex Phelan may see an opportunity to show off his golden arm.

Everett has won the first two of a three-game Catholic Conference gauntlet, but this will be its toughest test. Linebacker Mike LaRochelle could be a key defensive player for the Tide in this one, as Phelan will go across the middle as often as he will down the sidelines. Everett's running back by committee will keep fresh bodies in the backfield, but 6-5, 280-pound Cam Colwell will swallow up gaps, allowing linebackers Mike Hyatt and Cal Cuff to get to business.

Others to watch:

(Nonleague) – Brockton at Pinkerton (N.H.), Saturday at 1 p.m.

Just minutes away from yours truly, powerhouse Pinkerton Academy is to New Hampshire what Brockton is to Massachusetts. And you thought all the Granite State had to offer was dashing high school sports reporters.

(Nonleague) – Catholic Memorial at Bishop Guertin (N.H.), Friday at 7 p.m.

Think Expedia.com knows CM coach Alex Campea by name? Of course, the Longmeadow trip makes the visit to Bishop Guertin seem like a hop, skip, and jump away. And don't forget to add this juggernaut to the list of top teams up north. The 6-0 Cardinals have outscored opponents by an average score of 43-4. CM is officially for real is they pull this one off.

(Merrimack Valley Large) – Chelmsford at Andover, Friday at 7 p.m.

Andover has not beaten Chelmsford since 1998, and in the last 26 years are 4-21-1 against the Lions.

This game could have huge implications in deciding who will be the champion of the quietly dominant Merrimack Valley Conference (Large). Both squads are 4-1 and facing another MVC (Large) team for the first time this year.

GOING FOR TWO

Every week, your trusty, neighborhood reporter covers one or two games a week. This year, we’ll be breaking the game down and making observations in ways that the hectic weekend schedule does not allow.

Last week's game – Everett 14, BC High 13

As much as we love the competitiveness of high school sports, it's still all about sportsmanship and teamwork. It was a treat to hear the star of the game, Andrew Bowman, give credit to everyone in the stadium but the fried dough man (don't worry, we thanked him plenty.)

Everett coach John DiBiaso, who has seen it all and then some, had high praise for two BC High defenders. DiBiaso called AJ Okereke the best corner he has seen all year, and gushed about the phsyical speciman Andrew Tallman, who forced Everett to run left as opposed to right “almost 2 to 1”, according to DiBiaso.

For the first time this season, BC High unleashed the Wildcat offense. This version mostly featured running back Preston Cooper lined up as the quarterback, where he would run right. After riding the formation to an opening drive touchdown, BC High was unable to toss in any new wrinkles when Everett sent nine to the box, daring Cooper to throw the ball. We can't stop thinking how perfect the shifty former Dartmouth Indian Justin Mello would have been last year in this formation, with his ability to launch the ball and read defenses.

KING (AND THE REST) OF THE HILL

1.Xaverian (5-0) – Just look at what Xaverian graduate Rob Mariano has accomplished by the age of 33 - two Survivor appearance and two The Amazing Race appearances. Eat your hearts out, Hasselbecks.

2.Brockton (4-1) – As fate would have it, this year is the 61 year anniversary of Brockton's Rocky Marciano beating New Hampshire's George McGinnis with a broken thumb to capture the New England AAU heavyweight title in The Rock's last amateur bout. Will Pinkerton avenge their fellow statesman this weekend?

3.Everett (3-1) – The Tide was undoubtedly inspired by the presence of Everett historian Arnie Bordman, featured in Everett's Homecoming festivities that rivaled most Super Bowl pregame shows.

4.Billerica (4-1) – A close loss without all-everything quarterback Nick LaSpada, sidelined with a hip flexor, does not make Billerica a worse team. It just emphasizes how important LaSpada is to that squad. Perhaps now coach Peter Flynn will cut down the number of defensive snaps for LaSpada.

5.Catholic Memorial (4-0) – With nothing better to do, we ran Lorenzo Warren's name through Wikipedia, looking for potential famous matches. Just as we thought, there were none, clearing the way for the CM running back to become the most famous Lorenzo Warren of all time. At least in West Roxbury.

6.Chelmsford (4-1) – Its only halfway through the season, but Chelmsford could be sitting back at the end of the season lamenting on how Lawrence's big upset kept them out of the playoffs.

7.Central Catholic (4-1) – Central Catholic wasn't on everyone's list to watch this preseason, but the Raiders have made it a four-hore race in the MVC (Large).

8.Andover (4-1) – Andover's aerial attack has possibly made itself Division 1's most exciting team to watch. But will the cold weather force some adjustments? First-year coach John Rex probably wouldn't hesitate with an outstanding talent such as Nick Enxing in the backfield.

9.BC High (2-3) – BC High is good enough that a 4-1 finish to the season wouldn't shock anyone, but has struggled so much that it would still probably leave them out of the playoffs.

10. St. John's Prep (2-3) – Prep has been able to hang with the top dogs, but not overtake them, losing to Brockton, Everett, and Central Catholic by a combined 14 points. The Eagles will need to buck that trend if they intend on snagging a win when they visit their cousins out in Shrewsbury this weekend, who we hear are as strong as they have been in a long time.

11. Malden Catholic (2-3) – The next five games will be a vicious stretch for MC, which makes its inability to capitalize on Winchester last week all the more dissapointing.

12. Malden (2-3) – We've said it before, we'll say it again: Malden will go as far as its defense takes it. Holding North Quincy to a touchdown and escaping with a win solidifies that.

13. Medford (2-2) – Realistically, coach Rico Dello Iacono knows his season has already been successful. He's still a little “let down” however, after the Mustangs quietly fell just shy of defeating a strong North Andover team.

14. New Bedford (2-2-1) – Don't look now, but New Bedford is averaging over one-and-a-half points per game more than Brockton.

15. Somerville (2-3) – A 35-14 win over Stoughton should give the Highlanders a confidence boost heading into a bye week that precedes league play.

16. Lowell ( 1-4) – To have any chance to salvage this season, Lowell will need to upset Central Catholic this weekend.

17. Durfee (1-4) – A big congratulations to coach Dave Morgado, who recorded his first win with the Hilltoppers after 14 consecutive losses.

18. Cambridge (0-5) – The Falcons' losses have come against opponents with an aggregate record of 19-5, and the competition should considerably lighten up once Cambridge starts it Greater Boston League slate.
