Division 2/2A Notes
SIDELINE PERSPECTIVE
*** This segment is a mash up of random thoughts and observations over the past week in High School Football.
One of the biggest surprises so far has been the play of the Watertown Red Raiders. Watertown enters the fifth week of the season with a 4-0 record after defeating Weston 14-10 last week. This is amazing considering the fact that Watertown’s program was so down just a couple years ago that it needed to move out of the Middlesex League and become an independent. Much of the turnaround can be credited to coach John Cacace. Cacace has improved the football culture in Watertown and the system he has implemented has really worked.
After recording one win in the past two years (the win was by forfeit), Brian Chamberlain has Sharon at a .500 record this year (2-2).
King Philip is outscoring its opponents 140-0 in the first half. The Warriors lead Division 2 in scoring offense and scoring defense.
Mansfield has yet to score a point in the third quarter this season.
When Cape Ann (Large) teams are playing at home, they are nearly impossible to beat. Masconomet, Pentucket, Triton, North Andover and Wilmington have a combined 12-1 record at home.
Every team in the Patriot (Keenan) League has at least one victory on the road.
There are seven teams from Division 2 in the Globe's Top 20. Five of those seven are in the Top Ten. Two Division 2A teams are in the Top 20.
DIVISION 2 TOP 10
1. Reading (4-0) – Reading has dominated its opponents so far, giving up 3.5 points per game. The Rockets look like they could compete with anyone.
2. Walpole (4-0) – While last year’s team was built around its offensive explosiveness, this year’s squad has been stout on defense, allowing the fourth fewest points per game in Division 2.
3. Natick (4-0) – UConn-bound Scott McCummings has led the Red and Blue to one of the more efficient and productive offenses in Eastern Mass.
4. Dracut (2-2) – Despite the loss to Billerica, Dracut is still one of the best teams around. Both of the Middies’ losses were by a touchdown or less and last week they were without Rakeem Shepherd.
5. Mansfield (3-1) – After a loss to Franklin, Mansfield bounced back with a big win last week over Stoughton. This week, Mike Redding will return to the sidelines for the first time this season.
6. Franklin (4-0) – After the Panthers thrilling win over Mansfield, they struggled a bit against Canton. This week, Franklin faces a stiff test in Foxboro.
7. King Philip (4-0) – The cupcake portion of the King Philip roster is over. Now we will see what the Warriors are made of.
8. Foxboro (3-1) – Foxboro bounced North Attleboro from the rank of the unbeaten last week. This week, Foxboro has the chance to do the same thing against Franklin.
9. North Attleboro (3-1) – The Red Rocketeers lack of size showed itself against Foxboro when North Attleboro allowed more than 300 yards on the ground.
10. Burlington (3-1) – Burlington cracks the top 10 after an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Belmont.
On the Bubble: Canton, Methuen and Watertown.
DIVISION 2A TOP 10
1. Falmouth (4-0) – A huge upset win over BC High propels the Clippers into the top spot in Division 2A.
2. Plymouth North (4-0) – Plymouth North has shut out three of its four opponents. The Eagles play Cambridge this week before a showdown with ACL power Marshfield.
3. Masconomet (3-1) – The Chieftains were able to contain the high-flying offense of Westford last week.
4. Marshfield (2-2) – After playing a tough out of league schedule, Marshfield won its first ACL game on an end of the game field goal.
5. Triton (4-0) – Triton has the most explosive offense (35.5 ppg) and the third stingiest defense (7.5 ppg) in Division 2A
6. North Andover (3-1) – Zac Iovanella has piloted the Scarlet Knights to three straight wins after dropping the first game of the year.
7. Wilmington (3-1) – Wilmington suffered its first loss of the season last week to Lexington.
8. Silver Lake (2-1-1) – Silver Lake has a tune up against Randolph this week before starting league play.
9. Plymouth South (3-0) – The Panthers have rode the legs of Stefan Gustafson to a 3-0 record.
10. Weston (3-1) – Weston slides into the final spot in the top 10 despite a loss to Watertown last week. The Wildcats will be a contender for the DCL Small crown.
On the Bubble: Whitman-Hanson, Scituate and Duxbury.
GAMES TO WATCH
Foxboro at Franklin, Friday at 7 pm – Another week, another big game in the Hockomock League. After knocking off North Attleboro last week, Foxboro will look to do the same against undefeated Franklin.
Woburn at Burlington, Friday at 7 pm – This should be an interesting match-up between two talented teams. Burlington is young but was able to hold in check the offensive juggernaut that it Belmont. Woburn has looked good in its first three games. The Tanners’ two losses came against ranked opponents and were both by a touchdown or less.
Plymouth North at Cambridge, Friday at 7 pm – This should be a good test for the Eagles. Cambridge is a Division I team with some talent and should be a test before Plymouth North faces Marshfield.
Newburyport at Masconomet Friday at 7 pm – Newburyport always plays Masconomet tough, but this year, the Chieftains are just too much to handle. Chris Splinter and Evan Bunker might be the most athletic 1-2 punch in Eastern Mass.
PLAYERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON
DIVISION 2
Robbie Jackson, Natick – Jackson has been impenetrable as a defensive back and explosive on special teams. He has returned a punt, a kick off and two interceptions for touchdowns.
Mike Cochrane, King Philip – Cochrane has been Brandon Howard’s favorite target through the first four games. He has caught five touchdown passes so far and has also returned two punts for touchdowns.
Nick Elwell, Lawrence – Elwell led Lawrence to an upset victory over Chelmsford last week. On the season, Elwell has 11 touchdown passes, seven of which went to Mike Calzetta.
Tino Perrina, Reading – Perrina has been lights out so far for Reading. The talented tail back has 15 touchdowns through four games and is on pace to break his own scoring record from last season.
DIVISION 2A
Brendan O’Neil, Triton – One of the main reasons why Triton is undefeated and leads Division 2A in scoring is because of O’Neil. O’Neil has 13 touchdowns on the year and has scored 88 points.
Stefan Gustafson, Plymouth South – Gustafson has ran for 10 touchdowns in three games and is averaging nearly 200 yards rushing per game.
Kyle Daigneault, Whitman-Hanson – Daigneault is one of the Panthers’ most potent offensive weapons. He has scored six touchdowns and has helped lead Whitman-Hanson to a 3-1 record.
Zac Iovanella, North Andover – Iovanella has 10 touchdowns on the season and last week, he rushed for over 100 yards and had over 100 yards receiving.
