Austin Prep clinches Catholic Central
The No. 3 Cougars of Austin Prep continued their dominant season last night topping No. 6 Arlington Catholic 5-2 to clinch the Catholic Central Conference.
The win gives AP an 11-1-3 overall record and a 7-0-2 mark in conference. It marks their sixth title in the past nine seasons, but their first since 2007.
"It was a great performance," head coach Lou Finocchiaro said. "It was nice to get a win to clinch the conference and not be hoping for someone else to lose."
Ryan Quinn, a sophomore for Austin Prep second line, was the hero last night scoring twice and adding an assist, and his line mate Brian Wright added two goals as well. The third goal came from the team's third line.
"That was the nicest part about this for me," Finocchiaro said. "You can't have your top line do it all the time, everyone has to chip in. I tell my guys that we don't have a second line, we have two top lines."
The Cougars top line has certainly been a large part of their success however. The line is led by Brandon Hartt and his 31 points. Line mates Brandon Silk and Casey Miller, have also played great hockey down the stretch to help clinch the title.
Though there are no automatic bids to the Super 8, for my money the Cougars are in, not to mention at least one more team from the league. They have the record, the quality wins, (St. Mary's twice, Arlington Catholic, St. John's Prep, Central Catholic and Winchester) and a deep team with strong goal tending that is set up to go deep.
