No. 8 Needham got goals from Shaymus Colman and Lucas Davis in the final 39 seconds to stun second-ranked Catholic Memorial, 2-1, last night at Babson College in Wellesley.

The game was scoreless until 2:53 into the third period when CM (2-1) broke the deadlock.

Needham (3-0) called a timeout with 1:15 to go and pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.

Sophomore defenseman Shamus Colman fired a shot from the point through a screen that found its way to the back of the net to tie it with 39 seconds to go. The goal was assisted by junior defenseman Brendan Joyce.

After the ensuing faceoff Needham got the puck in deep and senior defenseman Timmy Parlato's shot was turned aside but senior forward Lucas Davis put the rebound home with nine seconds remaining.

“It was a great win,” said Rockets coach Bill Guisti. “Everyone was very excited. It was great to tie it up and with 39 seconds left we just hoped to preserve the tie.”

Three defensemen factored into the scoring in Needham’s comeback.

“We like to use the points a lot,” said Guisti. “Getting shots to the net is what we preach all the time, and then our guys can get in there and do the dirty work it takes to get the goals.”

Senior goalie Connor Murray had 25 saves in the win.

Guisti is very satisfied with his net minder. “He’s got good size, very athletic, great kid. He was our No. 1 guy last year, and played exceptionally well in the Super Eight.”

Murray has continued his strong play into this season.

“One of our biggest problems is getting timely goals,” Guisti said.

When they’ve made the Super 8, they always play well but tend to be snakebitten when it comes to scoring goals. But with 14 seniors on the squad this year, the Rockets are off to a terrific start.

“It’s a great win, gives us momentum going into our game against Hingham on Saturday,” said Guisti.
