Burlington's offense racked up six goals and junior goalie Derek DeCastro made 25 saves as the Burlington defeated Milton, 6-2, to claim the Division 1 state championship Sunday night at TD Garden.

Burlington took an early lead when senior Brian Hood scored at 1:31 of the first period. The first-line winger took a pass from C.J. Grinnell in the slot and slipped a wrister past Milton goaltender Jay Hankard to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead. Burlington controlled the play early, but the Wildcats had opportunities. Milton’s best scoring chance came when senior defenseman Dan Curran came out of the penalty box, beat two defenders to gain the line and went one-on-one with DeCastro. Curran got a shot off, but it went chest-high into DeCastro.

Burlington scored early in the second period when senior forward Brett Romkey, who had 14 goals this season, skated to the right dot and sent a backhanded shot soaring past Hankard’s left glove to give Burlington a 2-0 lead.

Milton had a flurry of shots in front of the net with just under eight minutes to play in the second, but DeCastro made some stellar saves.

Burlington opened up a 3-0 lead at 8:24 in the second with a hard-fought goal in front of the net. Senior Joe Moran won a puck battle along the boards and put the puck in front of the net, where Adam Crowley was waiting to muscle it under Hankard’s pads for his second point of the night.

Milton picked up the offensive pressure in the second period and had 10 shots on goal. Milton got on the board with a nifty play from Brendan Kelley to freshman Lloyd Hill to cut Burlington’s lead to 3-1. Kelley picked up the puck behind the net and slipped it to Hill, who was waiting in the slot to net his sixth goal of the year.

Burlington regained its three-goal lead less than two minutes into the third period. The Red Devils had a flurry of shots on Hankard before Dan McMahon finally slipped a goal through. Burlington added another on a slapper from the left dot by Trevor Cimino at 1:16. Milton cut the lead at 3:10 on a tally from Brian Higgins assisted by Paul Curran and Terrence Walsh.

Joe Berardi closed things out for the Burlington with an empty-net goal to seal the victory.
