5 things you should know in girls' hockey this week

Here are some interesting tidbits on the high school girls' hockey scene:

1) Defensive player of the week: Despite a 6-1 loss to Arlington Monday, goalie Karina Alfisher stopped a whopping 56 shots for Newton South. As the Lions' (3-13-3) season winds up, the senior posts a 2.80 goals against average and a 0.912 save percentage. Alfisher, who has two shutouts this season, squares off against Wayland/Weston Saturday and Waltham on Monday.

2) Offensive player of the week: With 1:50 remaining, Beverly/Danvers forward Nicole Woods scored the equalizer against the Masconomet/Hamilton-Wenham/North Andover co-op Wednesday, 1-1 to clinch the Northeastern Conference title. The junior leads the squad (14-0-2) with 20 goals and 18 assists and is sure to make an impact in the MIAA tournament.

3) Team to watch: Norwell earned a share of the SEMGHL East title after a 4-0 shutout of Martha's Vineyard Wednesday, in the squad's second varsity season. Tori Dinger, who was recently nominated as an SEMGHL All-Star, scored two goals and an assist for Norwell. The Clippers (9-3-4) move on to the Cougar Classic next week.

4) Biggest update from this week: It looks like Reading will have to wait until the MIAA tournament to get a second chance at unbeaten Woburn (14-0-3). The Rockets (13-4-1) fueled a late comeback in the third period with Ali O'Leary, Stephanie Cohen and the squad pulled its goalie, allowing Caroline Seibold to tie 3-3. With 45 seconds left, Woburn's Ashley Moran scored the winning goal to take the Middlesex League title.

5) Looking forward: Keep an eye on defending Division 1 state champion Arlington Catholic as the squad takes on a tough end-of-season lineup -- Lexington (Sat.), Falmouth (Sun.), Woburn (Tue.) and Duxbury (Thurs.). I couldn't come up with a better test for the Cougar's squad at (12-2-2). These are first-time matchups this season and the results are going to be a good indicator of how the tournament should go.
