The BC High boys' tennis team won the Catholic Conference championship for the first time with a 5-0 win over Malden Catholic Tuesday.
Lance Hutchinson has been coaching at BC High for four years, including head coach for the last two. He attributes the success of the Eagles to “a great team with a lot of hard-working, dedicated, talented players.”
Sophomore Charles Shewalter, who is USTA nationally ranked for New England, won the first singles match, 6-1, 6-0. The second singles match was won by junior Jeremy Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Justin McGaffighan won the third singles match, 6-1, 6-0. The first doubles match was won by sophomore Charles Morris and freshman Bailey Ward, 6-0, 6-0. The second doubles match was won by freshman Kaye Tittmann and senior Evan Walsh, 6-1, 6-3.
Hutchinson sees a lot of potential with his young team.
“Things are looking really good for the future of BC High tennis,” he said. “I hope we can make a deep run into the playoffs as a team and individually I hope they make a deep run in the individual tournament.”
The Eagles are 8-7 overall.
