Newton North's Carla Forbes wins national title
Newton North junior Carla Forbes followed up an indoor season in which she won the national title in the triple jump by winning the same event at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals Friday in North Carolina.
Forbes jumped 42-feet, 9.25-inches, a best in the nation for 2012. Forbes jumped 40-0 to win the All-State title two weeks ago.
Prep's Kurker leads North to hockey win
St. John's Prep senior forward Sam Kurker scored two goals to lead the North All-Stars past the South All-Stars, 4-2, at the DCU Center in Worcester Sunday in the third annual MSCHA High School All-Star Game.
The South jumped on top at the 41-second mark when Tom Cahill (Pembroke) buried a feed from Conal Lynch (Boston Latin) in the slot to go up, 1-0. The defenses took over until Kurker scored back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart with just over a minute remaining to put the North on top after 15 minutes.
North goaltender Joe Cerulo (Wakefield) made three saves in the period while his counterpart Kyle Moran (Marshfield) stopped seven.
To start the second, the North’s Daniel Holland (Woburn) was tripped on a rush by the South’s Ken Jacobson (Duxbury), drawing a penalty. The North quickly capitalized as defenseman Nikko Markham (St. Mary’s) beat Derek Kwok (Natick) under the crossbar at 1:32 to give the North a 3-1 cushion.
The South’s best chance in the second period came when Jake O’Rourke (Medway) weaved through two defenders but was stoned by North goaltender Dave Letarte (St. John’s Prep).
Kurker almost struck again late in the period when his feed out front deflected off the post, keeping the score at 3-1. The shots stood at 17-12 in favor of the North after 30 minutes of play.
The South cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third as Kevin Emmerling (St. John’s Shrewsbury) buried a cross crease feed from Lynch at the 4:10 mark. The North answered right back at 5:30 when Peter Sikalis (Acton-Boxboro) teed up a shot from the left point that beat Connor Murray (Needham) glove side to give the North another two-goal cushion. The North squashed any hopes of a South comeback, allowing only four shots in the third period. North goaltender Kyle Williams (Central Catholic) made three saves to close out the win.
Video: Bob Holmes on the Winter All-Scholastics
The Globe's Bob Holmes takes a look at the Winter All-Scholastics section which is coming out this Sunday and some of the top stories from the past season.
Concord-Carlisle's Andrea O'Brien commits to Boston College
Concord-Carlisle junior All-American soccer player Andrea O’Brien has committed to play for Boston College in 2013.
Back-to-back winner of the Dual County League MVP award and a Globe All-Scholastic, O’Brien netted 37 goals and added 10 assists for the Patriots last fall. She said her decision came down to three schools – Boston College, Georgetown and The University of Virginia – but she decided to stay local.
“When you live so close to a school sometimes you don’t really see it much,” O’Brien said. “But going on my overnight visit, I realized I loved the school. I was trying to find a great academic school but also one where there was a really strong soccer program.”
C-C head coach Nancy Slocum, who guided the Patriots to a 14-4 record last fall before getting knocked out by Peabody (the eventual state champion) in the Division 1 North quarterfinals, said Boston College seems like a good fit for the high-scoring forward.
“I hope she has as much success there as she’s had here,” Slocum said. “I think now she’ll be freed up to relax a little bit more and just play soccer to enjoy it and develop.”
But O’Brien, who believes she’ll stay in an attacking role while at B.C., said there is still more work to do while at Concord-Carlisle.
“I’ll have the same mentality as last year,” said O'Brien, who will join Peabody standout Hayley Dowd at B.C. “I want to graduate knowing we won a state tile at the high school. And I think it’s actually a realistic goal.”
O’Brien’s older brother Mikey, a leader on the C-C boys' team with 21 goals during his senior season last fall, will be attending The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania – considered among the top business programs in the country. He said he's unsure if he'll play soccer at the Ivy League school, which produced two 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft picks this year.
Fall All-Scholastics are out

The Boston Globe Fall All-Scholastics are out, available for view on Boston.com. More than 200 high school athletes from nine different sports have been selected as All-Scholastics, marking the end of the fall season.
On this season's cover is Concord-Carlisle brother-sister duo Mike and Andrea O'Brien, who are both All-American soccer players for the school. They highlight the level of talent of the many individuals selected this season.
Take a look at who was recognized in football, boys soccer, girls soccer, volleyball, field hockey, boys cross country, girls cross country, girls swimming and golf.
BC wins Albert Louis-Jean sweepstakes
Brockton High standout defensive back/receiver Albert Louis-Jean has verbally committed to attend Boston College, answering the nearly month-long question of where the state's top senior recruit will land. He withdrew his commitment to Miami shortly after head coach Randy Shannon was fired in late November, citing the move as one of the reasons for his withdrawal.
Louis-Jean's speed, cover skills, and hard hitting tackles have made him the envy of many colleges for the last few years, though he has struggled to stay healthy.
The Huddle: A look at our All-Scholastics
On Sunday, our All-Scholastics section will come out in the paper. The Globe's Chad Finn and high school sports editor Bob Holmes take a brief look at some of the football stars that made the cut.
Super Sunday

Who says high school sports are done for the summer?
The Sunday Globe is filled with high school coverage, including our 2009 Spring All-Scholastics and the first of a seven-part series by staff writer Bob Hohler chronicling the trials and tribulations of athletics in Boston's public school system.
We've got a bunch of extra content online for both series. Check out our Spring All-Scholastics, which features behind-the-scenes video from our Scholar-Athletes shoot, along with a feature we dubbed Academics or Athletics with those same award-winning standouts.
Check out Part 1 of our Failing our Athletes series and stick with us all week for much more. You'll find online extras, which include a video interview with Boston schools Athletic Director Ken Still and an interactive map of sports programs offered at city schools.
Over the weekend, we also unveiled the final Top 20s of the spring season and recapped Friday's Shriners Classic at Bentley College. Hop over to High School Sports Central for all the details.

Missing All-Stars
One of the most frequent questions we receive after our All-Scholastics sections run -- as our Winter 2009 section did this past Sunday -- is why certain leagues were omitted from the list of league all-stars that accompany each sport.
It's simple: You can't print what you don't have.
Fortunately, if your league missed the print deadline for the All-Scholastic section, there's still time to get your stars to us. You can email us your stars (but please call to confirm at (617) 929-2860) and we'll print a list of absentee leagues in Sunday's Globe.
What's more, we'll add all those leagues to our online section.
Congrats again to all the stars of the winter season.
Fall-Scholastics
We celebrate the accomplishments of the star athletes and teams from the fall season. Hop over to the Fall 2008 All-Scholastics page to relive an amazing season of high school athletics.

Watson addresses Globe All-Scholastics
All this week we'll be posting video highlights from the 2008 Globe All-Scholastics awards banquet, which featured New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson as the keynote speaker.
Watson mixed plenty of humor into his speech that encouraged the student-athletes to enjoy the journey throughout their high school and college careers. Below, check out a highlight reel from Watson's speech, which includes his thoughts on tracking down Champ Bailey during the 2005 playoffs, comments on Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, and a light moment after the speech in which Globe High School Sports Editor Bob Holmes draws the ire of the crowd with a jab at the 2007 Patriots.

Take a bow
Today, the Boston Globe unveiled our 2008 Spring All-Scholastics. Hop over and explore the section as we toast those athletes who remained focus during a time when thoughts drifted to pool parties, beaches, and lazy summer days.
A reminder to all of our All-Scholastics that today is also our year-end banquet at the Quincy Marriott. All athletes should have received their invitation to attend today's event, which includes New England Patriots tight end Ben Watson as a featured speaker.
I'll be on hand capturing video from the festivities and we'll post that starting tomorrow and running through next week. So even as high school sports slip into hibernation for the summer, stick with us for more coverage.
Plus, football season is only approximately 55 days away. We'll be back out at double sessions before you know it, so enjoy that time at the beach while you can.
Winter All-Scholastics
Winter officially ends today for high school sports as we punctuate another amazing season of accomplishments by debuting our 2007-08 winter All-Scholastics.
As always, selecting players for the limited number of spots on these elite teams is an arduous task for the Globe's high school sports staff. It's with the input of coaches and trusted observers that we present our take on the region's most noteworthy competitors. We remind everyone that this is a day to celebrate not only those who earned All-Scholastic honors, but also the countless others that were considered.
There's also a batch of multimedia on the All-Scholastics page for your perusal. Here's what you'll find:
- Airin' it out: We took four boys' hockey Super Teamers -- a quartet that competed in the Super 8 title game in Pat Kiley, Rob Toczylowski, and Mike Lozzi of Reading, and Greg Crovo of Malden Catholic -- and pitted them in a postseason rematch. But since we couldn't afford ice time at a local rink, we got the next best thing: air hockey. Check out how their only little Final Four tournament unfolded.
- Just horsin' around: We took seven boys' and girls' basketbal Super Teamers -- Gerard Coleman (West Roxbury), Jake O'Brien (BC High), Julian Colaruso (Catholic Memorial), Mary Nwachukwu (Dighton-Rehoboth), Ashley Rivera (Lowell), Caroline Stewart (Masconomet), and Courtney Finn (Winthrop) -- and brought them across Morrissey Blvd. to BC High's McNeice Pavillion for a game of H-O-R-S-E. A bit of a gender war broke out and the ladies walked away as queens of the hardwood.
- The 200 club: Check out a photo gallery documenting the five girls' hockey All-Scholastics that all reside in the elite 200-point (or more) club. Massachusetts may never see another group of athletes quite like this.
- Moments to savor: We count down 10 of our most memorable moments from the winter season. Now you tell us yours.
Thank you again to everyone that made the winter season a little less chilling, and a lot more chilling. Congrats to all of our All-Scholastics.
