Rafferty sets Berwick Academy all-time scoring record
With his 24-point effort in Berwick Academy’s 60-32 win over Landmark on Wednesday night, senior guard Harry Rafferty became the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Rafferty broke the record of 1,394, set by John Fagan in 2003, at the 13:35 mark of the second half with his 15th and 16th points of the night. The school record now is 1,404 points, which Rafferty will look to increase as the season progresses.
Rafferty knew the record was in reach for the road game and had his parents, brother, sister, aunt, and grandmother in attendance, according to Berwick Academy coach Rory Early.
“It was no surprise,” Early said.
The school will recognize Rafferty’s achievement by having his name added to a plaque with the school’s other 1,000-point scorers, according to Early.
“Harry is just a tremendous competitor, he has worked his behind off,” Early said. “I have watched him mature from a young boy to a young man.”
Rafferty is the reigning Eastern Independent League MVP.
“He has been nothing short (of an MVP),” Early said. “He represents the league with class and character.”
Early is in his second season guiding the Bulldogs and credits Rafferty with making his transition to head coach seamless.
“He’s a tremendous student of the game,” Early said. “I’m a fortunate coach to be able to have someone like that who makes my job so much easier.”

Nobles' Gallagher resigns as baseball coach
Nobles baseball coach and athletic director Alex Gallagher has resigned as the coach of the Independent School League's baseball team, he said in an e-mail to fellow coaches and the Globe.
Gallagher just recently took over as the athletic directer of the school.
"It has been a genuine honor to coach beside all of you over the last seven years," Gallagher wrote to his colleagues. "I look forward to following all of your teams in the months and years to come."
He cited a combination of his new job, a new assistant athletic director, and his wife expecting their fourth child as reasons for resigning his coaching position.
Junior varsity coach Andy Shumway will take over the varsity coaching position.

Wanted: Player Diaries
We're dusting off our Player Diaries blog for the fall season and we're looking for athletes who might be interested in chronicling their seasons on Boston.com.
Last fall, Mansfield football standout Mike McPherson and Ursuline volleyball All-Scholastic Caitlin Burchill kept us updated on their exciting seasons. Now we want you to tell us all about your fall season.
Interested? Drop us an email with your name, sport you play, and a brief bio about yourself. Remember, you don't have to be the team superstar. Heck, if you're the stats keeper and you want to tell the world about how your team is doing, we want you, too.
We'll pick a handful of our favorites to handle the Player Diaries this fall. Hey, it doesn't look bad on a college resume, either.
Several reporters and editors contribute updates, news and analysis to the High School Sports Blog.
- Bob Holmes: A Reading resident (Go Rockets!) and Boston College graduate, Holmes is the Boston Globe High School Sports Editor. We remind you now that his weekly picks are often made in jest so everyone just calm down when he picks against Everett for 11 straight weeks. Contact him at rholmes@globe.com. Follow him on Twitter @GlobeHolmes.
- Craig Larson: A native of West Springfield (Leo Durocher anyone? Tim Daggett?) and Curry College graduate (a proud Colonel!), Larson is the sports editor for the Globe's regional sections: South, West and North, as well as a frequent contributor on the college beat. Abington to Xaverian: it all starts with the schools. Have a compelling story idea? Contact him at clarson@globe.com. Follow him on Twitter @GlobeLars.
- Zuri Berry: Berry attended the same high school as sports legends O.J. Simpson and Joe DiMaggio. (Guess which one is his hero.) He's a South Boston resident (formerly of Eastie) and the editor of the High School Sports blog as well as the go-to-guy for everything high school sports on Boston.com. Contact him at zberry@boston.com and follow him on Twitter @ZuriBerry for all of the latest updates.
