GBL decides on playoff format

Posted by Staff November 9, 2012 12:44 PM

By Eric Russo, Globe Correspondent

The Greater Boston League football coaches and athletic directors met on Thursday morning to discuss how they would determine the league's two playoff teams under the new format that starts next season.

According to Everett coach and AD John DiBiaso, the top two teams in the league, based on record, will qualify for the postseason. Here's how things will work:

League games will be played during weeks 4 through 7.

Each team will play four league games, but only three will count toward their league record. The league's two Thanksgiving games (Malden vs. Medford and Somerville vs. Cambridge) will be discounted. Everett, who no longer plays on Thanksgiving, will have one of their games during weeks 4-7 discounted. This will be done on a rotating, alphabetical basis. In 2013, Everett's game vs. Cambridge will not count toward Everett's league record, but will count for the Falcons. In 2014, their game vs. Malden will be discounted, in 2015, Medford, in 2016, Somerville.

If there is a tie for the second playoff spot, head-to-head record will be used.

Without draft call, Wiseman chooses Vandy

Posted by Staff June 5, 2012 09:09 PM

Update: Rhett Wiseman was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 25th round of the MLB Draft (764th overall).

On Monday night, BB&N senior Rhett Wiseman had friends over to watch the MLB Draft. After the first 60 picks concluded day one and Wiseman’s name wasn’t called, the center fielder was not disappointed. When day two of the draft was also completed and Wiseman still was not selected, it was something he expected.

“Teams knew what it was going to take to sign me,” said Wiseman. “You set a number and stick to it. I wasn’t going to lower what I value myself at. I knew my number may be too high so I was ok with not getting drafted.”

With the new collective bargaining agreement making it hard for MLB teams to sign players drafted after the 10th round to contracts greater than $100,000, Wiseman knows his number will not be met. It means that instead of turning pro, Wiseman is now 100 percent sure he will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall, the school at which he committed to a baseball scholarship his sophomore year.

“I hopefully have the three best years of my life ahead of me at Vanderbilt and hopefully in three years I will have the chance to be drafted again,” said Wiseman.

The choice was not an easy one.

“This past week and a half has been really tough and emotional. During the season you think of how awesome it would be to get drafted, but it’s not real until two days before when you have to make a tough decision,” said Wiseman. “If you tell teams a price you stick to it.”

This summer Wiseman will play for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League along with other college players. During the Rox 56 game schedule, Wiseman will accumulate 200-250 at bats.

“It will be my first time facing college pitching every night,” said Wiseman. “It will put me in midseason form for when I go to Vanderbilt.”

Medford native Ben Waldrip was drafted Tuesday in the 10th round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Waldrip just completed his senior year at Jacksonville State University, hitting .330 while leading the team in home runs (18) and RBIs (61).

The slugging first baseman played at Medford High and was named the Greater Boston League MVP after hitting over .400 in his senior season. He was a GBL all-star for three years finishing his high school career with a .357 batting average and 12 homers. He also lettered in football and basketball at Medford.

Last summer Waldrip played for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape League. He was named the starting first baseman for the Eastern Division All-Star team and was second on the Cape in home runs (6) and RBI (23) while batting .276 on the season. Waldrip also played two summers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League for the North Shore Navigators and was named an NECBL All-Star in 2009.

Cambridge forfeits four hockey games

Posted by Bob Holmes, Globe Staff February 3, 2012 03:41 PM

The varsity hockey team at Cambridge Rindge and Latin has been told it must forfeit all but one of its five victories this season because an ineligible student was allowed to play.

The student, whose name has not been released, needed a waiver of what is referred to as the “five-year rule” in which a student’s eligibility to play high school sports expires four years after he or she graduates from the 8th grade, according to MIAA spokesman Paul Wetzel.

But Maryann Cappello, the athletic director for Cambridge Public Schools, said she did not file the waiver application by the Dec. 15 deadline because she became seriously ill on Dec. 13 and was then hospitalized for six days.

By the time Cappello filed the waiver application in January, the student had played in four of the team’s five victories and the MIAA ruled the school had to forfeit those games. The school received word Friday that an appeal of the decision had been denied.

“It’s not their fault,” Cappello said of the team, which has a 5-10 record. “They went out there and they played. It’s on administration, it’s on me. It should have been in on the 15th. I was sick and I wasn’t able to do it.”

Peter Cohen, whose son Byron Cohen is a captain of the hockey team, said forfeiting the games ruins any chance the team has of making the state playoffs this year, and it could also affect individual achievements, such as being one of the top goal scorers in the league.

Cohen wrote a letter to Rindge and Latin School Interim Principal Damon Smith Tuesday asking that the school petition the MIAA on behalf of the hockey team so the games wouldn’t have to be forfeited.

“We feel strongly that the students should not be penalized due to an error that was soley the responsibility of [Cambridge Rindge and Latin School] administration,” Cohen wrote.

Smith did not return a respond to a request for comment Friday, but Cappello said the school did appeal the ruling this week, and was informed this morning that the decision was final.

Wetzel said the MIAA allowed Rindge and Latin to file a late application for the student’s waiver because of Cappello’s illness. But Wetzel said the MIAA did not find there was sufficient reason to grant the request for the fifth-year waiver, and the hockey team must still forfeit any victories in which the ineligible student played.

“It’s over,” Wetzel said of the chances the decision could be overturned.

Cappello said she had become seriously ill in December and had spent time in intensive care before she returned to work on a part-time basis in early January. She said she was trying to catch up with a backlog of work when she returned, and did not remember to file the waiver until she got a call from a guidance counselor.

By then, Cappello said the student’s second quarter grades had been issued and he was no longer academically eligible to be on the team, either.

Prior to his second quarter grades being issued, the student did have the grades to play, Cappello said. But without the waiver for the five-year rule, the student still wasn’t eligible to play, she said.

The team’s first game was Dec. 17, and Cappello said the ineligible student played in a total of 10 games.

Wetzel said the MIAA typically receives about 100 applications per year for waivers of the five-year rule. He said many of the waivers are approved, but he said he would not call the waivers “routine.”

He said Cambridge must now send notice of the forfeits to the teams it beat while fielding the ineligible player.

Cappello said that despite its 5-10 record, the hockey team had still been hoping that it could rally and make the playoffs.

“I feel really, really bad about the situation,” she said.

5 games to watch tonight

Posted by Zuri Berry, Boston.com Staff September 23, 2011 03:28 PM

In Week 3, we have the ISL opening up its season and lots of games to watch, despite the downpour of rain in the region. So I'm going to split from my normal "10 games to watch" and instead give you five to choose from. I'll come back with another five tomorrow morning.

1. Belmont Hill at BB&N, 4 p.m. – It’s the season opener for ISL games and we get a chance to see powerhouse BB&N go to work right away. Chris Coady, who played running back for the Knights last year, will be the team’s QB. Add in a couple of stud linemen in Eric Olson and Dan Connaughton, and they’ve got a great team to watch.
My pick: BB&N

2. Lawrence (2-0) at Lowell (1-1), 7 p.m. – Two great athletes in this matchup, with Lawrence’s Kelvin Severino and Lowell’s R.J. Noel.
My pick: Lawrence

3. BC High (1-1) at Chelmsford (2-0), 7 p.m. – BC High lost last week against New Jersey power DePaul Catholic, but that doesn’t mean they lack for power. Seniors Preston Cooper and Gordon McLeod provide the scoring punch. For Chelmsford, quarterback Colby Emanouil keeps the Lions’ offensive engine running smooth and Tim Joy anchors one of the state’s top defenses.
My pick: BC High

4. Weymouth (2-0) at Gloucester (0-2), 7 p.m. – Gloucester’s on a new streak already, having lost two games in a row after reeling of 26 straight. Weymouth features one of the top receivers in the state in Khary Bailey-Smith.
My pick: Weymouth

5. Beverly (1-1) at Lynn English (2-0), 7 p.m. – Dom Abate and Brendan Flaherty are the scoring options for Beverly while Lynn English will rely upon deep threat receiver Malcolm Brown-Simpson and running back P.J. Dorsey. Jermaine Kelley orchestrates Lynn English’s offense at QB.
My pick: Lynn English

Shea was head coach at Middleboro from 2008-2010. He was also an assistant coach at Pope John and at Cambridge in 2003.

"John brings the ability to motivate our student-athletes to be successful,'' said athletic director Maryann Cappello. "He is dedicated to developing a quality program that stresses academics first, while helping each team member fully develop their athletic skills.''

No. 6 Cambridge downs Everett in GBL contest

Posted by Staff January 28, 2011 10:39 PM

The No. 6 Cambridge Falcons outscored host Everett 32-13 in the second half of last night's 48-31 victory over the Crimson Tide.

What was anticipated to be a high scoring Greater Boston League contest between two superior teams quickly turned sour as neither club found an offensive flow in the first half.

The Tide carried an 18-16 lead into the break, but the Falcons took control and finally came to life in the second half.

Unfortunately, for Everett, the offensive struggles only grew worse.

The Falcons held the Tide to just 3 points in the third quarter to take a 28-21 lead into the final stanza, which set the stage for a 20-point explosion in the last eight minutes.

"We moved the ball a lot better in the second half," Cambridge coach Lance Dottin said. "It was the defense in the second half that got us a couple opportunities to get on the break. In the first half we made a lot of bad decisions. We've obviously played better games – better halves, and I got to give Everett credit."

Senior forward Deondre Starling led the way with 12 points for the Falcons, scoring four of them in the fourth quarter.

Classmate Kyroe Qualls-Betts and sophomore center Jacquil Taylor aided the late surge as well, adding 5 and 4 points, respectively. Qualls-Betts finished with 9and Taylor finished with 7.

Starling said that it was the team's stellar defense, anchored by the 6-foot-8-inch Taylor, that helped turn the game around.

"We just talked about coming out strong in the second half after playing sloppy," Starling said. "Our defense motivated the locker room and got everybody back on the same page."

Dottin said that he was happy to get the win, despite the Falcons, who average 69.7 points per game, scoring just 48.

"It's a GBL victory so that's important for us," Dottin said. "We're usually more aggressive on the offensive end. I'm not sure what was going on, but we were able to change that in the second half."

BB&N edges Roxbury Latin by one, remains undefeated

Posted by Staff October 29, 2010 10:48 PM

BB&N wide receiver Sam Kimball caught a 9-yard pass from senior quarterback Eric Bertino, broke a tackle and dove over two defenders with a 1:30 left in the fourth quarter to give the Knights a 20-19 win over Roxbury Latin.

Junior running back Chris Coady paced the Knights offense, rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Coady broke the single-season school record for rushing yards with 1,211 in six games with two more games on the slate. BB&N is 6-0.

Groton and BB&N field hockey fight to 1-1 tie

Posted by Staff October 23, 2010 05:49 PM

For the host Groton Zebras, a goal from visiting BB&N in the closing minutes of Saturday's field hockey contest was nearly demoralizing.

With four and a half minutes left, the Knights broke what seemed like an eternally scoreless tie when Meghan O'Donnell rocketed a shot past Groton goalie Kaly Spilhans to give BB&N the 1-0 lead.

"It was just a beautiful shot," said Groton coach Martha Gracey. "It was high and just inside the left post, from about 16 yards out. I think it would've been really easy for the girls to just give up at that point."

But they didn't.

Just two minutes later, junior Talia Simon tied the game for the Zebras, scoring from about six yards out, and the two teams battled through a scoreless overtime to finish with a goal each.

Gracey said Groton played well for most of the game, controlling possession with 16 penalty corners and limiting BB&N to just a few shots on goal.

"This is a real big improvement," said Gracey about her team that is now 2-4-3 on the year.

In Gracey's first year as Groton coach in 2007, the Zebras didn't win a single game, she said. But since then Groton has steadily improved.

The Zebras dropped both of its previous matches against BB&N in the last two years, Gracey said. She thinks the tie will serve as a confidence boost for her team.

"We're the smallest school in the ISL [Independent School League]," said Gracey. "So any victory, any tie we can get, we feel good when we can do that."

BB&N is infused with new talent, still riding on Bertino

CAMBRIDGE -- In my first ISL stop, I headed over to BB&N to see how the Knights were shaping up this season.

Quarterback talent Eric Bertino was something to behold last season, leading the ISL with 24 touchdown passes. But the Knights fell to Lawrence Academy 28-26 to end their season.

Bertino will have the same task of hurdling over Lawrence Academy if he wants to get any hardware in his senior year. Luckily for him, the Knights have brought in some extra help.
