LAWRENCE — Jim O’Leary has coached high school football for over 40 years and has never seen anything more impressive than what Johnathan Thomas did Friday night.
No, it wasn’t Thomas’s 228 rushing yards that stunned O’Leary. There was one defensive play that overshadowed it all.
In the fourth quarter, Thomas returned an interception from deep in the end zone, and appeared to be tackled at the 10-yard line, and then again at the 20.
In a flash, he evaporated through the sea of Raiders for a 107-yard touchdown return, as the No. 4 Eagles defeated ninth-ranked Central Catholic, 40-21, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
