Welcome to Journalism 101, a class that begins and ends with spelling the names correctly. Sit down, sharpen your pencil, we're jumping right to the midterm exam, otherwise known as the undefeated Bourne football team.
The Canalmen, 5-0 after beating Seekonk, 42-0, Friday, are led by Matt Fernandez, Justin Fernandez, and Taylor Fernandes. Try calling in that game summary on a Friday night. "You're not kidding," said coach Barry Wood. "It isn't easy calling in those scores. There's usually some good humor there. When you're on the winning side, you don't mind laughing a little."
Matt is a senior running back who's on pace to gain almost 4,000 yards in his career. Matt is the leading scorer in Division 2A with 10 touchdowns. Justin is Matt's cousin, the quarterback, and a senior. Wood calls Justin, "a smart kid with speed to burn." Taylor is a junior fullback and linebacker.
The Fernandez/Fernandes/Fernandez combination aside, Woods knows where the credit should go for Bourne's fast start.
"We knew coming into the year that defense would be our strength," said Wood, whose defense has recorded three shutouts. "We just built our defense on speed."
When your defensive tackles are 145 pounds (Nick Watt) and 155 pounds (Scott Onanian), you'd better be quick. Nick Martin and Justin Anderson also are key figures on defense.
This week Bourne hosts Martha's Vineyard and Wood will make another round of Friday calls to newspapers from Boston to the Cape. "The first couple times it got a little tricky," he said. "Everybody has sort of adjusted across the board. If I'm saying Fernandez a lot, then that means we're scoring a lot and that's good. So far no one's complained. I think everyone's doing a good job."
Including the Canalmen.
Looking ahead
