Stoneham finished 3-8 last season but came into this Thanksgiving 7-3, so it looked as if the program had turned over a new leaf.
A victory over rival Reading was all the Spartans needed for the perfect ending to their renaissance season.
Too bad the Rockets had other plans.
Sean Rafferty scored on a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Reading a 19-14 victory. With the win, the Rockets (5-5) improved their series lead to 53-15-4.
The Spartans jumped ahead in the first quarter on Jeff Bruno's 58-yard touchdown run.
The Rockets answered in fine form, scoring twice in the first quarter for a 6-point lead. Brendan Beucler scored first on a 2-yard run, followed by Rafferty with a 5-yard run.
Bruno put the Spartans on top in the second, running in from 2 yards for the score. After a Dan Dowling extra point, Stoneham had a 1-point lead.
But the lead wouldn't hold.
"We look back, 7-4 was a nice year," said Stoneham coach Bob Powers. "Reading is a team that held Burlington to 19 points and Woburn to 14.
"Obviously, we were looking to win, but things go as they do sometime."
