ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS
Coach: Bill Kinsherf (12th season, 70-45-1).
Last season: 1-9.
Returning starters (7) : Sean Costello, OT/DE, 6-2, 250, Sr.; Jeremiah Foley, OT/DE, 6-0, 220, Sr.; Brandon Gallow, TE/DE, 5-10, 200, Sr.; Kevin Pateline, RB/DB, 5-7, 160, Sr.; Kyle Holmes, DL/LB, 6-1, 175, Sr.; David Marx, RB/DB, 5-7, 160, Sr.; Nick Querzoli, RB/LB, 5-9, 175, Sr.
Returning lettermen: Too many to list.
Strengths: Offensive and defensive line.
Concerns: Inexperience at quarterback.
Outlook: The task of rebounding from a one-win season won't be an easy one for Archbishop Williams after losing three-year starting quarterback Chris Costello, but the defense looks ready to step up. Matt McGinley will be the key to stopping the run at defensive tackle and head coach Bill Kinsherf know how important he is to his defense. "He has such a low center of gravity that there aren't many teams that can neutralize his presence," he said. Senior DJ Haskins will step into the role of starting quarterback but he will have a three-headed monster coming out of the backfield in Kevin Pateline, David Marx and Nick Querzolo. "He knows the system pretty well and having the three running backs will help him tremendously."
ARLINGTON CATHOLIC
Coach: Serge Clivio (18th year, 77-99).
Last year's record: 9-1.
Playing surface: Artificial turf.
Football website: Maxpreps.com.
Returning starters (12): Justin Cerram DB/WR, 5-9, 165, Sr.; Nicholas Desjarndin, DL-OL, 6-1, 225, Sr.; Robert Donoghue, C, 6-2, 225, Sr.; Derek Harmon, RB, 5-7, 195, Sr.; Alex Kerrigan, DB, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Eddie McDonald, LB-RB, 5-5, 145, Sr.; Dan Sullivan, TE-LB, 5-11, 220, Sr.; Larry Gerrity, OL, 6-1, 230, Sr.; Jacob Hart, DL, 6-0, 225, Sr.; Joe Granato, DB/WR, 6-1, 195, Sr.; Steve Kerins, OL/DL, 5-10, 185, Jr.; Steve Pagliocca, LB, 6-1, 200, Jr.
Returning letter winners (5): Josh Nowak, Sr.; Chris Lake, Sr.; Corey Spencer, Jr.; Travis Stanley, Jr.; Charlie Bates, So.
Strength: Improved defensive and offensive lines.
Concern: Replacing graduated skill players on offense.
Outlook: After going 9-1 last year, AC lost three record-setting players in QB Matt D'Olivera, WR Ryan Stanley (18 TDs) and DB Jonathan Jean-Louis. Running back Derek Harmon will be counted on to be a force out of the backfield and pick up some of the slack the seniors left. Defense looks to be the Cougars' strength as most of the defense is returning. Linebackers Nick Desjardin, Harmon, Eddie Mcdonald and Dan Sullivan will set the pace for what should be a stifling defense. "We obviously have a lot of guys coming back on defense so that will make the offensive losses hurt less," head coach Serge Clivio said. "The offense may take some time to jell but I think we'll be a solid, tough team to play."
AUSTIN PREP
Coach: Bill Maradei (29th year, 205-85-4)
Last year's record: 5-6.
Playing surface: Grass.
Football website: Maxpreps.com.
Returning starters (8): Steve Boghos, QB, 5-11, 175, Sr.; John Smyth, OG, 5-11, 200, Sr.; Matt Bouvier, DE, 6-4, 200, Sr.; Dan Ellis, LB, 5-11, 195, Sr.; Mike Maglioshetti, DL, 6-1, 235, Sr.; Clancy Main, OL, 5-8, 195, Sr.; Kyle Vieira, OL, 5-9, 210, Sr.; Steve DeLuca, DB, 6-0, 175, Sr.
Returning letter winners (5): Cam Dunn, RB, Sr.; Mark McKinnon, OL, Sr.; Dave Scranton, OL, Sr.; Dave Stamatis, DL, Sr.; Jim Wilkie, OL, Jr.
Strength: Experience at quarterback and work ethic.
Concern: Depth if any injuries occur, sophomores will have to step in.
Outlook: With record-setting running back Nathan Sherr now at UConn, Austin Prep quarterback Steve Boghos will be carrying the offensive load on his shoulders as the team tries to rebound from its first losing season in 12 years. Boghos passed for more than 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season and tossed 17 touchdowns after throwing 19 as a sophomore and the Cougars will need that type of production again this year. "Thank god we have him," head coach Bill Maradei said. "He's a high-percentage passer and doesn't make many mistakes." Marardei is expecting a lot out of new linebackers John Randolph (junior) and Matt Mulcahey (sophomore) in addition to the pass-rushing John Smyth at defensive end. Maradei said the in-conference schedule is going to be hard on his team, especially against Bishop Fenwick on Thanksgiving. "They have the best defense in the league and Bobby Tarr is a great running back," he said.
BISHOP FENWICK
Coach: Dave Woods (10th year, 75-27).
Last year's record: 9-2.
Playing surface: Artificial turf.
Football website: fenwick.org/bishopfenwick.aspx?pgID=935.
Returning starters (11): Bobby Tarr, RB, 6-0, 200, Sr.; John Baker, QB/S, 5-9, 185, Sr.; Anthony Pisani, OLB, 5-11, 200, Sr.; Lucas Sobezenski, G/DT, 6-1, 215, Sr.; John Moran, OT/DT, 6-5, 285, Sr.; Dan White, OT/DT, 6-4, 255, Sr.; Cody Johnson, TE/DE, 6-2, 245, Sr.; T.J. Fossa, LB, 5-9, 210, Sr.; Brendan Barrett, C, 5-9, 170, Sr.; Ben Terenzoni, CB, 5-10, 175, Sr; Kyle White, OLB, 5-7, 155, Jr.
Returning letter winners (3): Nick Guido, DB, Jr.; Dan Kennedy, DB/RB, Jr.; Dennis Kanarkiewicz, C/DT, Jr.
Strengths: Size at offensive and defensive line, speed in the secondary, running back.
Concern: Inexperience at quarterback.
Outlook: Expectations are high for Bishop Fenwick because it is bringing back running back Bobby Tarr (more than 2,500 yards rushing last year) and a solid defense. Tarr will need to pile up the yardage while new quarterback John Baker gets acclimated to the starting role. Baker will have time to throw in the pocket as the Crusaders have three starting offensive lineman to protect him. On defense, cornerback Ben Terenzoni and Baker will make it difficult for the opposition to throw against Fenwick. The Crusaders also move into a new field this year with artificial turf and lights for the first time. "It's exciting to play on a brand new field," coach Dave Woods said. "We have an opportunity to do special things this year."
CARDINAL SPELLMAN
Coach: John Nickley (eighth year, 39-38-1).
Last year's record: 3-7-1.
Playing surface: Grass.
Football website: Spellman.com
Returning starters (
9): Jason Adams, LB, 5-8, 140, Sr.; Andrew Capachione, FB/LB, 5-9, 205, Sr.; Mike D'Alessandro, OT, 6-3, 225, Sr.; Febrice Dragon, RB, 5-11, 185, Sr.; Tom Lesage, WR, 5-9, 140, Sr.; Mike Milero, DB, 5-10, 170, Sr.; Larry Standford, C, 5-9, 225, Sr.; Paul Whelan, DB, 5-11, 175, Sr.; Sean O'Brien, OT, 5-10, 170, Jr.
Strength: Defensive starters, hard work.
Concern: Lost many seniors, inexperience.
Outlook: Cardinal Spellman will have a sophomore starting at quarterback in Michael Connolly but he will have a few weapons surrounding him. Wide receiver Tom Lesage (9 touchdowns last year) and running back Febrice Dragon will give Connolly some options while he get settled at quarterback. The strength of the team will be its defensive backfield with cornerbacks Paul Whelan and Mike Milero. A familiar face will be returning to the sidelines as John Nickley, who was head coach from 1991-1997 and went to a Super Bowl in 1992, looks to improve on the team's three wins last year. This will be his second time replacing Massachusetts Hall of Fame coach Peter Ambrose (211 career wins) and he has his work cut out for him. "I think we'll get better as the season goes on," Nickley said. "These young guys may take a little while to come together but we'll be a solid team by the end of the year."
ST. MARY'S
Coach: Jeff Smith (second year)
Last year's record: 2-8.
Returning starters (6): Dan O'Connell, OL/DL, 5-10, 260, Sr.; Anthony Campogne, TE/LB, 6-2, 230, Sr.; Rich Barrows, WR/DB, 5-11, 180, Sr.; Kwesi Foster, RB/DB 5-10, 180, Sr.; Stephen Harper, 6-2, 195, Sr.; Derek Riley, OL/DL, 6-5, 280, Sr.
Returning lettermen: Nick Cavaliere, OL/DL, Sr.; Cameron Sewall, OL/DL, Sr.; Larry DiRocco, OL/DL, Sr.; Jordan Harvey, RB/LB, Jr.; Jon Festa, OL/LB, Jr.; John Lamothe ,QB/DB, Jr.; Shaun Kehoe, QB, Jr.; Jay Fink, WR/DB, Jr.; Christian Doucette, OL/DL, Jr.; Corey Campbell. OL/DL, Jr.
Strengths: Depth at skill positions, work ethic and enthusiasm.
Concerns: Inexperience at quarterback and depth at offensive line.
Outlook: St. Mary's is going into its second year under head coach Jeff Smith's regime and this year's squad is ready to forget about last year's two-win team and focus on winning games. "This team just knows the game a lot better than a year ago," Smith said. "They're studying film better now and are finally starting to understand what it takes to be successful at this level." There will be a battle at quarterback between John Lamothe and Shaun Kehoe but the Spartans have three outstanding playmakers. Kwesi Foster, Rich Barrows, and Stephen Harper and will ride the three as far as they can take the team. Foster and Barrows will help the team run the ball effectively and Harper doubles as an athletic receiver and a pass-rushing end on defense.
