Q &A

Email|Print| Text size + By Matt Porter

With a rivalry game against Danvers tomorrow and a playoff berth on the horizon, Gloucester’s record-setting running back Andrew Fulford sat down with Globe correspondent Matt Porter, a proud Fishermen alum (Class of ’02), to talk about sub shops, football, and Thanksgiving.

ON SCHOOL

Q. The hardest class I had at GHS was Mr. Brooks’s chemistry class. Pretty sure I never got above a C in anything. How about you?
A. My hardest class has to be honors English. I’ve taken it every year. All the reading and writing we have to do. Overall I’ve been pretty successful in it, but it’s a lot of work.

Q. What do you think of the cafeteria food – good, bad, or bring your own?
A. A I usually eat the cafeteria food. I get a calzone, because they make chicken parm, pizza, and cheesesteak, which are pretty good.

Q. How’s the college selection process going? Where are you looking?
A. Well, right now I’m trying to find a place to play hockey next year. It’s coming a little slow, but we’ll get into it as the winter goes on. I want to go to any place that will give me a chance to play.

ON LIFE

Q. My favorite beach is Wingaersheek, because I lived right next to it growing up. What’s your favorite beach?
A. I spend the most time at Good Harbor, because we have summer running there. Most of the football team is there at 6 in the morning, two or three days a week. We hang out there, too. So either that, or work.

Q. Where’d you work for the summer?
A. For the last month and a half of the summer I lobstered on D-Lowe’s boat [Donny Lowe, Gloucester High hockey coach]. I did some landscaping, too.

Q. All right, this is the big question. There’s so many great sub shops in Gloucester, which three are your favorites?
A. I’ll probably have to pick Sclafani’s — it’s always good — and Mike’s Place has the best chicken finger subs. And Destino’s has the best cheesesteaks in town.

Q. As a Fisherman, if you go to a restaurant, do you order fish or are you a steak guy?
A. Probably steak. I have nothing against fish though, I like that, too.

Q. White or dark meat on Thanksgiving?
A. Every meat, man. It’s Thanksgiving – you don’t stop until you can’t eat any more.

Q. Can you vote in the upcoming election? Have you picked a candidate yet?
A. Yeah. I turned 18 in September. I haven’t really picked a candidate yet. I don’t follow politics enough to have really picked a candidate.

ON FOOTBALL

Q. What are you listening to before a game?
A. I always listen to Lil’ Wayne before the games. No song in particular, just anything that comes out of my iPod.

Q. Why did you choose to be a running back?
A. When I was growing up, I was always fast, and I liked getting the ball. So being a little fast guy, it just went along with me.

Q. Can the Patriots go undefeated?
A. If they stay healthy, I can’t see them losing a game. Maybe against Pittsburgh.
