The Eagles have landed at No. 1.

Visiting St. John's Prep last night handed Everett its first loss in 63 regular-season games, showcasing a relentless defense and capitalizing on a sloppy Everett offense en route to a 20-7 victory.

Everett's last loss was to Cambridge Rindge and Latin on Nov. 22, 2001.

"No one was going to stop us," said George Sessoms, who ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns. "We're gonna try to start a streak of our own."

The turning point came after Prep (4-0) fumbled a botched snap late in the first half. Everett had the ball at the Prep 18, trailing, 6-0. After starting back Jesus Crawford was injured on a carry, replacement Jean Bourdeau was unable to punch it in on fourth and goal from the 4.

"They deserved it," said Everett coach John DiBiaso, reflecting on the Tide's six turnovers. "They outplayed us physically. Mentally we weren't prepared for this game."

The Tide, whose offense relies on outside pitches and inside power runs, was dared to throw by a stacked defensive package.

"We had a great defensive game plan," said coach Prep coach Jim O'Leary. "We came into this game expecting to win, like we do any other game."

The Eagles struck on their first play from scrimmage. Sessoms took a handoff up the middle, broke through the first line of defense, then won a footrace with Everett's Dio McCloud for an 88-yard touchdown.

St. John's capitalized in the third quarter after Matt Costello fumbled a punt inside the Everett 5. Greg Donahue faked to his fullback then pitched to Sessoms, who ran in from 3 yards. Donahue hit James Fahey in the corner of the end zone for a 2-point conversion.

With less than nine minutes left in the game, Sessoms's broke another big play, a 65-yard run to put St. John's up 20-0.

Following Everett's game-opening drive, Igor Garcia's punt was fumbled by Prep standout Brendon Felder and recovered by the Tide's Jim Noel. Prep's blistering defense stifled the Tide's offense, forcing another punt that was again bobbled, but recovered, by Felder.

Everett threatened in the second half, assembling a steady drive patched together by two third-down conversions by Joe Conti (a keeper and an improvised scramble).

Conti, however, then delivered a high pass that bounced off receiver Manny Asprilla's hands and was intercepted by diving defender Brian Keenan. It was one of Keenan's two interceptions.

Diman 22, Cape Cod Tech 6 - Taylor Inkley and Ron Simmons each had seven tackles for the Bengals.

Hull 47, Greater Lowell 13 - Dan Shea scored two touchdowns and the Pirates broke it open with 17 first-quarter points.

Blue Hills 38, Nantucket 6 - Senior Kevin Murphy ran for five touchdowns and 232 for the Warriors.

North Reading 22, Ipswich 6 - Dino Rizzo scored on a fumble return and an interception return to lead the Hornets.

West Bridgewater 36, Old Colony 16 - Patrick Johansen ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Whittier 36, Gr. Lawrence 12 - Bryan Trickett scored three touchdowns for the Wildcats.
