BARRINGTON, R.I. - What was built up as a border war - one of Rhode Island's best high school football teams versus one of the best in Massachusetts - bordered on domination as Barrington (R.I.) romped to a 28-0 win over Bishop Feehan last night.

The Shamrocks, the defending Division 2 state champions, made the 40-minute drive south from Attleboro only to produce their worst performance of the season and pick up their first loss.

Bishop Feehan (3-1) turned the ball over three times in the second half, including an interception and fumble at Barrington's goal line.

The Shamrocks will try to put the sloppy performance out their minds, but they'll sure have stories to tell about Barrington running back Michael Read.

The speedy junior back - who has been clocked by coach Bill McCagney running a 4.2 in the 40-yard dash - sliced through Bishop Feehan defense, racking up 162 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Read's biggest play came on the opening kickoff of the second half, which he returned 82 yards for a touchdown without a Shamrock causing the slightest disturbance.

Barrington's 14-0 lead at halftime became 21-0 just eight seconds into the third quarter.

Whatever steam the Shamrocks might have picked up during halftime was gone.

"It was just a case of good blocking. The credit goes to the offensive line," said Read.

A simple explanation for a performance that looked, at times, simple.

But simple was not what Barrington had prepared for, McCagney said.

"We knew [Bishop Feehan was] going to be great. We knew they were probably going to be on a higher level than anything we had seen this season," McCagney said.

"I give a lot of credit to our guys because they raised themselves to [Bishop] Feehan's level all week long in practice and they continued that into tonight."

Barrington took the lead with 6:03 remaining in the first half when Stephen Crawford found wide receiver Adam Snow wide open in the end zone after a double-reverse flea flicker.

Barrington scored again 41 seconds before halftime when Crawford and Snow hooked up for a 2-yard touchdown pass.

Crawford passed to Connor Fiske for a 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.

Read capped his magnificent evening with 6:28 to play when he broke four tackles on a 52-yard touchdown sprint.
