Newton South coach Ted Dalicandro knew he would have to squeeze everything he could out of quarterback Derek Russell if his team was to defeat Weston.
Still, the Lions did not expect to reap what Russell provided in a 41-23 nonleague victory yesterday.
"He's been great for us," said Dalicandro, whose team climbed to 2-3.
"[Russell] means everything to our team. He's a great leader who can do it all."
The senior southpaw contributed to five of Newton South's seven touchdowns. He also picked off three passes, although two were nullified by penalties. Russell completed 9 of 12 passes for 192 yards, three for touchdowns, and ran for two TDs. He also accumulated 72 rushing yards on 12 carries
"I'm just trying to help the team win, whatever it takes," said Russell, who has thrown 10 touchdown passes and rushed for five TDs this season. "We have two wins in a row so we're hoping to keep the ball rolling."
