The Eagles were routed by Everett on the gridiron Friday night, but the BC High boys' soccer team had the right stuff yesterday in its 2-1 victory over Catholic Conference rival Xaverian.

An own goal early in the first half gave BC High (8-0-3) a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half, midfielder James McDermott fed forward Robbie Berquist, and Berquist lofted the ball over the keeper's head to put BC High up, 2-0.

The Hawks (5-2-3) cut the lead in half in the 78th minute and came close to tying the score in the closing minutes, but Joe Travers made four of his six saves late in the game to preserve BC High's lead.

"Xaverian was a great opponent and the action was back and forth," said Eagles coach Billy Ryan. "But Travers made some absolutely outstanding stops with time winding down and helped us get the win."

In another conference game, Zachary Hathaway scored on a first-half free kick as St. John's Prep beat Malden Catholic, 1-0.

Field hockey
Middlesex: Catherine Moore scored twice and had an assist to lead Belmont to a 3-0 victory over Wakefield . . . Stephanie Crowe scored two goals and had an assist in Winchester's 3-0 win over Burlington.
