FALL RIVER - As expected, Duxbury made its reservation for the Division 2A Super Bowl with a dominant 31-13 win over Apponequet last night at Mac Aldrich Field.
The Green Dragons' reward: a date with Gloucester Saturday at Gillette Stadium.
Senior Shane Dibona led the way with two rushing touchdowns on offense and a key stop on defense on the game's opening drive.
Faced with a fourth and 1 on their 29-yard line, the Lakers decided to go for it, but Dibona and teammates Tyler Genereux and Kyle Gavoni suffocated running back John Gaynor for no gain.
"It was a big stop," said Duxbury coach Dave Maimaron. "They rolled the dice and our defense held them."
That set the tone for the game as Duxbury (12-0) took advantage of prime field position. Dibona's first carry was a 15-yard burst up the seam that set up his first score, a 3-yard scamper, for a 7-0 lead.
On Apponequet's ensuing drive, quarterback Michael Wojtkonski threw his first of two interceptions, this one to Duxbury's Matt Savard at the Lakers' 23.
The Green Dragons cashed in with Dibona's second touchdown.
Quarterback Sean Cross connected with wide receiver Quinn Cully on a crossing route over the middle for 13 yards. Eventually, Dibona scored on a 2-yard dart to the left corner, giving the Green Dragons a 14-0 lead.
Ben Startzell tacked on a 22-yard field goal for a 17-0 halftime lead as the Green Dragons held Apponequet (11-1) to 57 yards of total offense.
In the third quarter, Duxbury came out passing. Senior wide receiver Hakeem Lecky hauled in an 18-yarder down the sideline and Cully grabbed a 24-yard scoring toss from Cross.
Apponequet's offense remained sluggish until the fourth, when the Lakers scored twice.
Wide receiver Ryan Tomlinson snared a Wojtkonski pass, hurdled a defender, and sprinted for a 68-yard touchdown at 6:30.
Wojtkonski's 2-point conversion pass failed, leaving Apponequet trailing, 24-6.
Duxbury put it away on its next drive as Cross found Lecky for a 66-yard touchdown connection with 4:10 left.
Running back Ben Bullock punched in the final score for the Lakers on a 2-yard run with eight seconds remaining.
Maimaron feels the Green Dragons will need their best performance against Gloucester.
"It is going to have to be a total team effort," he said.![]()
